could you post a snippet of your raw apache log?
this could actually be someone trying url hacking looking for exploits in your server.

its not from the log its captured with $_SERVER or older version of this func

your php function may be incorrectly implemented, then...
you should always use your apache logs to check out header irregularities.
php's $_server uses the webserver to get these values.

It's not a problem with PHP/function, it's a privacy tool that hides the referrer behind a fake field.
