there is no standard.
Check whats the targted people for the site.
34% still use 800x600. You have to take care of them. Its our job.

I agree, but depending on target only.
If I was going to make a real state site, that will be seen by 45 - 55 year olds, i would probably make sure the site has no flash, layers, and designed in 640x480.
But if it is a snowboarding dvd video company, that will be seen by people between 14 and 30, that has a good income to buy into the sport, I assume they have a computer with flash and on 1024.. in that case screw 800x600..

I agree with Meeklo, target audience stats should be gatehred and sites sized accordingly.
But the sad fact is still:
54% 1024
28% 800That's nearly one in three people...jeeze...
stats are from Internet.com's The Counter for one week sample last month with 15 million visitors.

wow, that's dropping fast. Last time I checked 8*6 was still at around 50%.
Good to see, but, yeah. If you're all "fuck them because they don't change their resolution then they're going to be all like "fuck you, I'm not using your website."
In the end it's your job to design around the problems that come with designing for the screen. If you can't, then sharpen your skills.

must be time for me to say:
Your users may not be average.
