Its a bit up its arse in places. It can sound a bit elitist and sanctimonious at times. Cut through that though and its very useful.
I refer to it quite often when clients give me dodgy copy.

I know of a story where a guy sent in a couple of terse letters to London Underground as to Why Earl's Court Station had an apostrophe and Barons Court (the next stop) hadn't.
