Just got back from my first trip to Amsterdam....FANTASTIC! I'm curious if anyone knows how difficult it is for US people to move and get design jobs over there. TIA.

Smellvetica,
Spent a week in the flat of a friend in the de Pijpe (sp?) district. I think we walked the entire city, saw as much as we could of the "big" sites (museums, etc), spent much time in cafes of all kinds, drank a good amount of jenever, took a side trip to Antwerp, and quite a bit more. Ate a lot of beeterballen (sp?). You're going to have a great time.....
- vburo0
ha yeah...
De Pijp
Bitterballen
You got Jenever good tho! ;)
hey, smell.. when will you arrive in amsterdam?
btw. i replied to your email only yesterday..

Hello Reaction,
Thanks and yes, if you've got any info on design companies over there I'd be grateful if you could send them.
I know one of my favorite outfits is there: QuA Associates (www.qua.nl) and Strawberry Frog, although they're out of my league. Blast Radius has an office there as well, I think.
Anyway, thanks again.

afa, you got quite a neat portfolio, i'd just give it a shot. you never know.
btw. you should get the Aqua book if it is still available. It rocks.

shouldn't be too diifficult for an american, although getting a work permit there takes a while. you need to get a company to want to hire you. then, you apply for a visa and they have to advertise the position in the papers, to see if there is no local that could fill the position (it's more of a formality)
and when you get there, you have to wait months before you get approval from the immigration police to start working (even if you get a work-permit visa which can take between 3-5 months in your own country)
if you come from abroad finding a reasonable rent appartment is tough. they have crazy waiting lists there.
after working in NYC and Amsterdam—I say stay in the US. Better professionals in the US. Dutch design is more about looking functional as an aesthetic decision and very little about really being functional. Plus they treat foreigners like shit, but maybe it's different if you're an american caucasian.
whatever you do—don't go to work for IJsfontein. Although there are taleted people there—it's run by a bunch of buffoons.

e: amsterdam has become more racist over the last couple of years and as you prolly know it's focussed on mostly one ethnic group for the obvious reasons you also know. but i never heard that they treat americans as shit though.
