Is there a way to translate a color in illustrator to its equivalent in the PMS chart?
thanks in advance!

I may be misunderstanding what your asking, but isn't that what the little number is when you roll over a color swatch in illy?

window>swatch libraries
and pick a pantone one

Yes you got that right!
Fron the Swatches palette click little arrow, Open Swatch library.
I got that part down.
Now, the question was.
what happens if I have the artwork, and one of the colors is just shwoing as CMYK, is there a way to make it match with the same color under the PMS?Thanks in advance!

easiest way i found for this:
double click color swatch in tools palette to bring up picker window, copy html value (easiest), go to photoshop, doubleclick color swatch in tools palette, paaste in html color value, click custom, read pantone color suggested, go back to illy, do "find" in pantone swatch lib for number.

...unless you're intending to make the spot colour as close to the CMYK as possible, then I'd say get your hands on a pantone print swatch and match them by eye.

i wouldn't trust a CMYK to PMS conversion if you are actually printinng spot colors.. the PMS to CMYK values are a little more involved than just eyeballing.
best to go by yourself a PMS Formula Guide and pick the colors you want outta there. well worth the $100.

you're flirting with print disaster if you trust Photoshop to pick your Pantones.
