Hey guys, I'm 14 and am planning on purchasing a new PC. My budget is not huge and so cannot be too exuberant on the components that I uy, but I'd just like to hear your opinions on the set up I have planned:
- AMD Athlon 64 3000+
- 1280MB DDR RAM
- Elite K8T800-A Motherboard
- XFX GeForce 6600GTWill this be suitable for graphics work? What sort of improvements will I see using the 64bit processor (and naturally WinXP x64)?

I'm afarid to say that I have never used a PC , and know nothing about specs. But have you considered a MAC already?
I only ask because it's sorta industry standard and if you learn now it will save you a ball ache when you go to study at uni.
Just a thought that's all

What? I just thought I would "announce" my age to clarify that I do not have the funds someone working a full time job would have. I thought it was relevant, if not, sorry?

Sorry for the multiple post, bad character!
Yeah I never understood when people annouce their age in here before a post... it usually is an age under 18 and is followed by a question that has nothing remotely to do with the fact. but anyway...
I'm 15 and I think those specs are just fine for your designers pcs. The memory spec sounds weird to me, it's more like 1256 which is alright, maybe do 1512. You wont see too much beifit from 64 bit yet until Longhorn comes in 2006 or the soon to be 64bit ver of XP.
new x86 chips that incorporate two CPU's on one moard are coming soon and are supposed to be priced similar to single CPU chips... you might want to wait for these cause you will see a very nice speed increase here.
Good luck with your new PC and stay strong, I know how tough these adolecent years can be. With enough optimism and angst you will make it through to adulthood in one piece and be that much more punk for having done so.

Because then you'd realize that, being 14, he doesn't have very much money (usually).
But then he would soon realize that most of the members here are designers, and designers don't have much money. Or so I heard.

i think i'm the youngest girl here. definitely not the youngest member anymore.

And as for a Mac, there is no way on Earth I could afford one of those, although I do use onr egularly elsewhere and am beginning to familiarise myself with them. I am building myself a PC because they are generally cheaper.
If I could, I would by a G5 in a heartbeat

(May 14 05, 13:35)I'm 20 and I don't work and have no funds either, so your point is?

Mac's are overrated. They are great computers, but not as great as you would be led to believe.

Thanks for that randoman, I would probably consider that if my upper limit on a processor wasn't £100 / £110 (meager, I know).
The Athlon 64 3000+ seems to give me the best performance for my money, unless I am wrong and P4s out perform AMDs in the tasks and pricerange I am requiring?
- ethios0
Lesk, where are you going with this? I honestl thought that my age was relevant to what I was asking and would help people understand my financial situation a little better.
- Jaline0
I don't have any problems with posting your age up here. There are certainly various differences between age.
- randoman0
Theres a lot of people who think P4 is a flawed CPU from the begining so yes, AMD would be better choice over the P4 i think - both price and performance wise.
- NegativeSpace0
I say go with that setup, sounds wicked. I am AMD user myself and have had no problems.

Hmmm, what are the rules on the increments of RAM you are allowed to install?
I currently have 256MB (eek) and have just purchased 2 x 512MB. Thus 1280MB.
