you can use those marks all you like - but it wont mean anything unless you file the approriate paperwork with the gov.
On the other hand if you dont want to spend the $1000 doing that, you can always stick the piece you have designed or recorded into a sealed envelope and send it firstclass to yourself.
This process stamps a legal government time and date on there - thus if someone ever tried to use your goods and you have to prove you did it first in court - you have a legal copy dated. Just dont open the envelope yourself - let the judge do it!
