How's he done this? This bitmappy, maths sort of effect, can't describe it:

I don't see any reason why they couldn't have been bodged together 'manually' - ie, by making a pixel-like brush, then repeating for effect.
Either that, or they're genuinely generated with some algorithm in something like processing or maybe even flash, if you were to turn aliasing off.. (make it low quality, that is)

yeh i could only think that they're pixel by pixel or whatever. I'm off to make paper fractals!

that sounds interesting - how are you doing that?
I've always been a big fan of fractals and love making things in illustrator that, at first glance, appear to be generated. but aren't. Screwing around with maps is particularily interesting.
For an interesting (read 'vaguely tasteful'!) bent on fractals, try this site:

Yeh i love maps. Did a series of experiments where i sort of bent contours into shapes, and even people. worked quite well.
I found a site for primary school kids on making paper fractals by folding strips of card (i.e 1" by 11") end to end, over and over again, then unfolding it and putting it on its side, and putting all the folds at specific rightangles. They had a java demonstration of it too. Search google for "How to make fractals"
