ok...not exactly an expert as web design...mainly a print designer, but I know meta tags are dead, but what is the best way of getting your site in a good position on search engines...

When Google had their directory connected to their front page, I used to be ranked #1 for .wav file format. In the entire world, but now I'm low: http://www.google.com/Top/Arts/M…
Damn that got me a lot of marketing/web gigs when I was a young buck. people thought I knew a bunch of sh*t. Meanwhile, I think it was just because of plastering my links everywhere like an idiot.

when I worked at Carnegie Mellon, I met representatives from Google.com. They were so hush-hush tight about that stuff.

AdWorks is a pay per click thing.
I have a client who is interested in it too. Just not sure if its a waste of money or not.

it can work. I did it with Loopkit and we made money from it, it's just hard to judge what is what. You have to have excellent tracking mechanisms set up as well, so you know it's worth it and you can validate whether you want to keep it going. Adwords I mean
