anyone know the best way to allow a client to update content for a flash site externally?
- Engage_London0
either use a cms tool...
or for a really basic way just have an external data file... but keep it dead simple!

thanks engage.. can you recommend any good cms tools? as for the simple way do you mean something like a xml file the client could learn to update?

simple php updating text files is some thing i use quite often. have some examples if you like.

yep...
cms is usually better if you get someone to program it for you, you'll soon understand it yourself and start building on it
once you've done it once you can improve it for your next client etc...
rather than reinventing the wheel each time

mydo that would be great if you could post some examples.
engage i see what you mean..

the small websites i design are all using external .txt documents and jpg files.
you have to give the client some instructions how to access and update them by ftp, but in mostly all cases it works dead easy and they're not calling you every week or what for making stupid updates.

stewart, sounds great but does that mean the have no control over formatting?
- stewart0
they only have control over the content, images and text, not the design/layout.
in these cases they can't add or delete chapters etc too.but hey, their budgets are max € 3.000,- so...

fair enough.. i was just thinking it would be nice some way to allow them to make text bold, underlined etc...
- stewart0
oh for sure that's possible if you check the 'render as html' button when you make your dynamic text box in flash.
then you can put html tags in your .txt files like hyperlinks, colour, bold, italic

ah! excellent! i am very new to external data in flash. thank you stewart

mydo, i'd love to see an example of your way to update the txt by php.
for example, how do you setup a php file for editing a bunch of small txt files on the server, i mean without making one php file for every txt file that has to be changed?
thanks!
