justingodard, what was it you liked at Shimokitazawa?

Shimokitazawa:
I can't remember much about that area exactly - but I do remember that the people there were really friendly, and the bars were a lot of fun. Lots of places with character on little alleys filled with locals.
Saw a great show at Club Que (sp?), and met a fellow French Canadian who operated a little Jazz bar that was on the corner somewhere.
Sorry, but that's really all I can remember.
I also forgot to mention that Koenji had great vintage clothing.

Peter would be able to give you the best break-down, but here's my analysis...
Shibuya is gonna have the best clubs, the huge, rap-video-sized joints usually playing the latest HipHop music mixed with a little Techno. Try to get to Harlem if you can.
Shibuya also demands that you dress trendy. I felt out of sorts without a trucker cap and I actually bought a gay one that said "California".
(Everyone asked where I was from, I could just say "california!" and point to the hat. They didn't know where Indiana was)
Roppongi is less classy, but more fun if you're not over 20 (and hence, can't legally drink) Besides the strip clubs and naughty shops, the dance clubs/bars like 911 (my favorite) Wallstreet, and GasPanic have to be checked out.
Little tip about the clubs in Roppongi...don't pay a cover until you have them SHOW you the dance floor. If there aren't girls, respectfully decline. 911 and Wallstreet (there are 2 wallstreets) are usually good about this after 11pm.
JUST REMEMBER, the subways close at about 12am. So if you stay later than that, you better stay up the whole night or find a good place to crash. Taxi's are gonna kill your wallet.

And about Roppongi, you're going to find almost all foreigners in the clubs who usually bring their girlfriends. And some Japanese girls too just looking for foreigners, but that's always a gamble of a hookup.

PeterH,
Walking home today I remembered this place called Duke Saloon in Shimokitazawa.
Sounds awful, but the place had an amazing record collection. Best part was that the spines of the records were facing inwards, and they were still able to find everything requested. It was impressive - or maybe I was drinking too much. I'd try it out if you're a Bowie, VU, T.Rex fan.
Justin.

some people in my family were born in Kobe, Japan and some of my family lived in Tokyo and Kobe for 65 years. i was brainwashed growing up by my father all about Japan as he traveled there often and often he stayed there for long journeys at a time. well as the years had passed and a lot of my cousins have made their own respective journeys to Japan. it took me my whole life of watching people i never knew to people i knew very well to live vicariously thru their journeys, that i still cant afford the trip there, but i did manage to get to Narita airport many times...
and that is as far into the country that i have gotten.
back then i smoked a ton of cigarettes daily and i mean a real scary amount, and i enjoyed all the cigs i smoked in that nasty nasty nasty nasty nasty smoked filled smoking room they got nasty!
ok till today i feel to most people in the werld traveling or always imagining traveling to Japan have the jitters to what they want to accomplish on their journeys, but if they make it there the plan should be made b4! its expensive and the women i witnessed in the airport alone!
have fun and take pictures and visit all the vending machines and get some sex!
oh yeh try and find some weed!
and goto a rave on Mt. Fuji!

Holy shit are you kidding me?!
You're in tokyo and wasting time on NT
You fucktard!
Get on a train and see where you end up
There's a mini-adventure waiting for you at every stop
Let chip show you around but for the love of GOD don't let him take you to the strip bar he took me to. 5 hours and $400 later I had to drag myself out of there with some of the dancers and woke up in the morning with a 12" dildo halfway up my arse

Ha, the supermarket next to me has their own theme song, not too different from AKihabaras.
I whistle it while shopping, but they don't give me any discounts.

for clubbing if you are into DJ electronic stuff, your best option are the Unit in Daikanyama, the Air in Ebisu or the Liquid Room and somethime the Yellow.
Roppongi sucks badly. exept if you wana go to striptease club or if you feel homesicke maybe.
For hanging out, Harajuku, Aoyama, Daikanyama, Shimokitazawa and Kichijoji aare cool place to de some chill out shopping. If you want more action head to the busy district sush as Shibuya, Shijuku or Akiabara. If you like fashion labell you can also stop by Ginza.
Their is also gona be a huge firework show at Odaiba tomorrow night (saturday) altough it might rain.
To see the harajuku gothic, best is to go on Sunday PM at the entrance of Yoyogi.
have fun

definitely check out the whole Roppongi Hills building. It has to be seen to be believed.
The Mori museum at the top is great, but the skyscraper itself is just incredible. Seriously high and very wide, I watched it get built over a couple of years and it just looked so damn cool at every stage.
Wish I could have been there when they turned 20 odd floors into a giant graphic equalizer for a Japanese radio station.
