They just hired a new VP at my current gig that is supposedly going to be outsourcing our design/development services to India.
Anyone know about this? What is the going rate for web development in India?

Be specific, what costs are you talking about?
Contractor rates in India. Hahahha, yeah like nearly nothing. They are paid sh*t over there. Why do you think companies outsource to place like Russia and India. What do they have in common. Tons of people that are jobless. US, UK, DE companies make sh*tloads in the amoun they save.

Indians are not good at design. The cultural differences are too great and there's just not a lot of emphasis on visual communication in their country.
Indians are decent at development if you can ensure quality control.

what are we talking about here? strictly development or design too?
its tough to give you a rate as its a savage market here, but its bound to be a tithe of what is charged in North America.
if its any indication, a well paid developer here gets about US$300 - 500/month. Art Directors could make anything from US$800 to 1200 /month.

very good point fate_
you might get a functioning dynamic website back, but you are going to have to tweak that thing hardcore.
I've purchased Wiki's from Moscow before for clients, but they were so banged up.

I remember reading about this programmer here in the US (worked for a big company) that was getting around 70 grand a year, but hired a programmer from Bangalore to do all the work for him.
The code was great...and he was paying the Indian person about 16 grand a year!

(Aug 9 05, 07:40)design is culture specific as you've specified yourself.
and on the contrary, India a very visual country. Indian vernacular most necessarily always wont mix with popular culture in the west, but the industry here itself is huge.
like you said, design appreciation is culture specific.

India is quite visual in terms of their culture and customs, but I guess it's different with design, especially when mixed with the West.

Indians are not good at design.
But then again that's just a sweeping generalisation.fate_

The company I work for has one full time designer (me) and one full time programmer.
I won't start looking for a new job yet but I'm not feeling too encouraged by this new direction the company is heading in.

tell your vp he is the reason america is going to shit. outsourcing for the almighty dollar.
- fate_0
MX, if you'd like I can start keeping a collection of all the Indian "designers" I come across. I'm sure I could collect 100 within the week from chat alone.

There is a whole design area for web development. I forgot where it is. Its not Banglore. I don't know how far they've gotten as far as quality of design. Mostly imitating the west.
You never know.good article:

"Indians are not good at design."
"Indians are decent at development"
I'll outsource to you overgeneralization quotes.

The large majority of Indians in the graphic and web design industries are not good at design. Was that specific enough for you?
Same statement, same validity.
- JazX0
fate_ has a point the QA has to be there, if it isn't your process is broken.
Dev -> QA -> Prod

(Aug 9 05, 08:12)What is your basis for this argument? Sounds pretty racist/elitist

Again, I've been over this. I've outsourced work to Indian designers and learned my lesson. I've seen hundreds of portfolios. I've seen just as many rips of western websites. I've seen horrible template's en masse fill up "work" sections, and photoshop abuse that'd make you cringe.
Yes I realize there are some designers from India who are decent. I host one http://rohit.fatedesigns.com . Even Rohit would agree, there just isn't the kind of history of graphic design and visual communication in India.
Some of you need to stop thinking this is such an insult. I know design is soooo important and it's the only thing that matters in life, but what I'm saying isn't false or ignorant.

You host me to, and my culture is from Sri Lanka.
