what is the best fonts for printing in small sizes so it is very clear & readable?

6 is the smallest that you can happily get away with.

myriad has been good to me. but it is easier to get away with serif than sans serif when it is really small.

If you want to stay readable at tiny sizes, look to fonts with a large x-height and counters, and a generous width. The following do very well sub-6pt.

Good call, Stew. Swift was designed by Gerard Unger for small print in newspapers. Here's a better view:

Bell Centennial - Its the phonebook typeface and was designed specifially to be read at small sizes. (Blow it up big and you'll see.)
