A few days ago i started a thread asking what was the first design book/article people remember reading.
Well, I asked b/c I am a grad student at UI, and I teach a graphic design I class. I'd love to have my students reading, but i run into the problem of the readings being to complex or not understood because of lack of experience.
If anyone has a top 3 reccomend read for new designers I'd love to see it.

Not sure if this will help, but this book was one of my first real introductions to the history of graphic design. It may work for your students as it's a good overview. It's important for them to develop a good foundation for knowledge that will allow them to understand future readings. Most people come into design with little knowledge of what's been done before them and it's critical for designers to understand their place in the history of design in order to evolve it.

The 1st design book I read – assigned by a college instructor in a web design class – was The Non-Designer’s Design Book by Robin Williams. It’s thin and an easy read with basic rules of design explained clearly but without any amazing graphics.
A basic book I would really recommend is The Elements of Graphic Design by Alex White – another thin book but with more fundamental rules of design explained – it’s more for people interested in graphic design as a profession. It has a lot of excellent practical and historical examples.

My first design book was Principles of Two-Dimensional Design by: Wucios Wong.
it's ony 96 pages and is a very short read but it helps to illustrate the basic principles offForm, repetition, structure, similariy, gradation, radiation, anomoly, contrast, concentration, texture, and space.
Hope you find this helpful.
