Don't dismiss it out of hand just because it's MSFT. Check out this video if you haven't already, it's rather long but it shows the guy who's designing the animation tool walking through it's features (incidentally, this guy, Manuel Clement, was featured in the first New Masters of Flash book back in the day).

Bottom line is that this new technology gives you direct access to the actual OS rather than simply creating graphics through a plug-in.

another format in a professional world is dangerous.
Every fucking sad ass client who thinks they know something will get this crap and say, "Hey can you design it with Expression"- screw that- this means trouble around every turn.
Will someone please just shoot Bill Gates already! Why shoot Lennon, Kennedy, but not this tool?

Does the shit even run on Macs? Or Linux?

+++I can't find an answer to that question (it's driving me insane)...
... I think anything done in 'Sparkle' has to have something called winFS and winFX in the OS... sooooo - um... no to macs and linux... and from what I'm learning - they 'decided' to go ahead and create winFS (file storage control) for windows XP...
... but I've heard nothing 'mac' related...
... now all that crap is web-related of course... but are these apps being made for other OS's (the design prog etc)..
... eh... I'm starting to understand how 'old people' can get cranky with new technology.

So it's DOA exactly because it can't use a plugin. Sounds like shit to me. I don't want people bitching about not being able to view things because MS are proprietary whores.

Nice try, but this is just a joke!

dudes, this looks so sweet. i can't wait to mess with it.
true, it'll make some crappy stuff in the wrong hands(ala flash in '99)
true, macs won't see it for a while until they make a workaround
true, it's yet another technology that is going to make our lives difficult,
but dudes, this is so sweet and cool and is going to make the web sweeter.
think long term, all!

I'm waiting to see something more tangible than demos. Btw seems quite impressive.

I'll put down $10 saying it will be here to stay ;)
Especially in the UI / software dev and Enterprise world.

(Sep 21 05, 02:01)"the only thing that couldn't be done before is to sell a client on a major corporate site using the shockwave plugin - with a microsoft-backed plugin, it's going to be on 90% of the world's computers in no time - that's what happened with the flash player.

as long as stupid people are using it, they will only create stupid design.
the power lies not in the program but in the designer
giving a paintbrush to a child does not make him an artist
- yurimon0
If you know what good for you,
You will also know that MSF will screw you in arse at the end. its a cycle.
- -scarabin-0
there is seriously nothing to worry about here
the worst that can happen is that every company gets a copy of it and does all their design in-house, in which case it will all look like shit
the companies that want an edge will come to us to design for them
it's a safe circle

any designer should free his ability and mind from software and use it as a tool

HAHA
I remember about 10 years ago they came out with a product to compete with Macromedia Flash.

We had to switch from PowerPoint to Keynote. I know I dont have to explain myself.
