Hi,
I've just graduated from uni and finding it pretty hard to get my first job in the new media design/web design industry. You guys have been doing this longer than i have, therefore you have experience. Can you give me any advice please, as i'm struggling here in Glasgow.
Cheers

Have you done your own website yet? If not that is where you should start. And just apply to as many jobs that look interesting and may challenge you.

without a doubt, your website is key.
once its up, just paste the address into a generic 'how do you do' letter, and email companies/ people until your hand hurts :)

I know of a guy who, if he doesn't see a URL on someone's portfolio/resume he will automatically chuck it out. he hires for microsoft (or used to...)

although, you have a website.
try and pick someone/people you want to work for and then shock them into giving you a job by just being awesome. it might/might not work.
be creative and stand out from everyone else by doing something that they won't expect.
