I checked the sound prefrences everything looks fine, I have been uploading a lot of CDs to itunes lately, could that of done anything? maybe overheated or something? Anybody had this problem?

No sound in any application? Sometimes my AfterEffects changes settings that the other apps don't like and you have to open the audio midi utility to reset it. usually iTunes works when that happens though.

no sound with anything, even when i hit the sound button it doesnt make the clicking sound it makes when lowering or turning up

when i was trying to play something in itunes a little while ago it everyonce in awhile it would make a little bit of static sound then go away...not doing it now though.

static? sounds like a speaker problem. esp. if you don't even hear system sounds.

I don't see how that could of happened, I don't blast the sound or anything. I only heard that static for a short second or two and im still trying to play stuff and I don't hear the static anymore. This thing is less then 2 years old. I don't know what to do. Can I just bring it in to the Genius Bar at apple?

I don't know. When I've heard speakers die it's usually right after I hear static. It is weird if they just randomly died, but stranger things have happened. Do you have the extended warranty?
- eyemistisorange0
no, do I need to have that to take it there? Do you know how much they charge if I don't have the extended warranty?
- skelly0
I guess it depends on what the problem is. It probably isn't very expensive to throw in 2 new speakers if that's the problem. Maybe one of the cords wasn't soldered properly.

The first thing you need to do, is plug in a set of headphones to make sure it is a speaker problem.
About how much they will charge at the "genious" bar..
well I don't know for sure but I had bad experience there... the apple store sucks..good luck!

yeah tried earphones and they dont work either, does that mean its proably something else?
- Meeklo0
it might be your soundcard then, not your speakers..
:(

i had the problem where my speakers wouldn't work but headphones would.
somehow the computer thought headphones were still plugged in and it stopped playing through the speakers.
i just flicked the computer where the headphone jack is a few times, and that solved it.
but if headphones don't work for you either, then sorry but i can't help!

under Sound Effects in the Sound Prefrences window the "Built-in Audio: Internal speakers," to play the sound effects, drop down is greyed out. It's like my my speakers or soundcard is disabled or something?
- ribit0
That menu is greyed out if you dont have other speakers attached...and that pane is only about alert sounds... 'Output' is the main audio pane.
You could also test with USB speakers...
