To those that think Apple is only putting up this tribute to boost sales:
remember that in the past month and a half they've introduced: iPod nano, iPods with video, new iMacs, new Powermacs, new Powerbooks & Aperture. Lot's of products that Apple would surely love to plaster across their front page and advertise the hell out of.
They took all of these out of the the main position of their webpage for an image dedicated to the memory of Rosa Parks.
I'm sorry, but if they really wanted to increase their sales and stock price, they would have just ignored Rosa Parks passing, and just kept up a rotation of the iPod and iMac in that spot.
The other point, until that memorial went up on Apple's site, I had never heard of Rosa Parks or what she had done. Now I do. I think that's pretty important.

Very interesting Nathan_Adams. Never thought about the global exposure of it all...

I find it wierd that on a site where the majority of the users work in the creative industry for commercial clients people seem to be confused about wtf an ad is. I don't care if apple made this 5, 10 or 30 years ago, or if they claim it's in homage, or whatever it links to, its ADVERTISING. The question raised by designbum that kicked this thread off is whether it's ethical to use an image of rosa parks in an advert. simple. I don't think it is, so I agree with designass. The posts rambling on about how we live in a capitalist world and that's just the way it is, so apple are great because at least they're raising issues etc. are worrying! what's next, NESTLERELIEF for somalia?

haven't read the entire thread but when i went to the page a twinge of suspision flashed through my head. i don't think they should use an image. she did something great. apple makes expensive gadgets.

Apple clearing their frontpage for tsunami relief, george harrison, rosa parks etc. is out pure respect for the people imo.
But there is always the folks who needs to badmouth them for it, and I have no idea why! With 50 million hits a month they do get the word out better and more clear than most websites.

put it in perspective... for gods sake... when she was alive everyone thought it was very thoughtful, and now they are remembering her now she has died... did it have a link to click it through to an ipod? NO! what would have been there would have!
Would you of thought the same if they had put Jim Henson up there and clicked through to an iFrog ?
sorry couldn't resist!
- JamesEStone0
if they hadn't used an image of her people would of found it disrespectful... oh they were happy to use her while alive but now she has just a little text link...
similar to in this country... if there is a big story in the paper about someone it is on the front page... when they are wrong the apology is on page 18 next to an ad for Cilit Bang

I was going to mention that they did the same for George Harrison when he past on.
I don't think many scousers complained.
It's just as sign of respect to someone they were associated with in the past.
Plus it reminded a wider audience of who she is and what she stood for. And how recent it all was. A few people here have already said they didn't realise she had died until they saw it on the site (I'm one of those people).
Apple has always had a socially idealistic brand, it's part of it's make up rightly or wrongly, isn't it better for a company to at least attempt to be socially concious rather than not give a fuck at all?

...and they make black ipods now :)

So you're telling me that if Nestle were to set up a fund to help out Somalia that you would not want them to send that money and help out? Does everything have to be done by non-profit indepent organizations and people? Why not have the people that have the most money, exposure, power doing something good with it? Praise it when it happens. I don't understand why anyone helping out anyone is a bad thing....whether its a corporation or individual. WOWZERS.

why is everyone so self righteous on here these days? is it coz you can buy a t-shirt for whatever your issue is these days!

My perspective:
At first I thought it was a ploy to sell products (I use PC by the way)After thinking about it...
....it does click through to a memorial site.
I work for lids.com, something like 30% of our business stems from the main adverts on the homepage. The goal is to get the customer to the product purchase page as quickly as possible with few clicks. From a marketing standpoint this is not going to help sales. It may however, help the brand’s image.
Also at some point they had to contact Rosa, and get her to sign off on the ad. Is it wrong to think that they may have had some sort of relationship with her in the past, maybe even paying usage fees to utilize her image? I’m willing to bet that they only had paid to use the images for the span in the 90s. Meaning that to reuse the ad today they would have to renegotiate a contract with her family. I will guess that just setting this up cost them a pretty penny with the money going to Rosa’s family.
With that said, I agree with a little bit from everyone. I just think that the thread was lacking the understanding that these ads are not cheap. In this case it could only boost apple’s image, not ipod sales. Who knows, maybe because they had a relationship with her in the past they just wanted to do this in her memory.

this is an understatement. she worked directly with them, i'm sure she was very well compensated.
i can't believe this is still going on. what a bunch of paranoid mofos some of you are.

There are bigger and better fights to fight and this topic isn't one of them.

This thread is pretty rediculous.
I'm sure apple spent tons of money to put up a tribute to a black lady.
i mean, that is what this is about right?? it's not because of who she is or what she did. its because she's black. all of a sudden people have a problem.
never mind the fact that rosa parks was the one who ultimately decided that they could buy the rights to the image and use it in that fashion.
if u wanna bitch about companies making money off of black people, bitch about sprite and their ads, or quaker oats for putting a whole nigger family on a spinning record.
