Just curious who here works in house and if so how did they find the position. I just moved to Chicago and have met some really great people and interviewed with some great design firms. I have recieved some freelance and contract offers, but id love something more permanent. Any suggestions on finding in house opportunity besides the newspaper or craigslist???

In-house is great at a studio or agency with a somewhat diverse clientel.
In-house is horrible at a company that has a shallow product/ pool. Trust me, I re-invent the wheel on a weekly basis.

---Freelancing doesnt mean you have to ba a slave. It all depends of how strict you are with your own time and your clients. They have to know you have a life too yk'now?!

freelancing could be good. My thing is I just moved here and with the holidays coming up and all I'd prefer something long-term as a posed to a (one-month contract).

Monster has always been the best way I've found in-house work. Although I do prefer working at a design firm.
Any in-house work I've done, as well as my peers, have been for companies in a variety of industries with little or no creative knowledge. Therefore, they hire their designers from the same place they hire their accountants...

hm. I know a few people who have really loved there experience. One friend worked in house for calvin klein and loved it and another a small scrapbooking place and he also dug the freedom and projects. Guess it depends on the place.

In-house has its advantages - if you can get in-house with a team of 2 or more other designers I'd recommend giving it a try. If you're the sole creative, make sure you really know their management structure or you may find that they just see you as a pixel pusher they can dictate to.
