if you are in the city: go to the majestic/magic stick (http://www.majesticdetroit.com... magic stick is a great music venue has bowling and pool. the majestic is a bit nicer/cleaner and usually has house music, martinis etc.
smalls bar in hamtramack ( there are a lot of other bars there too ) is fun (http://www.smallsbardetroit.com...
also the motor lounge if you want techno or to check out a club.also check out the lager house on michigan ave. (i think).
i don't go back very often at all, but those are my joints when i do
this might be helpful. http://www.motorcityrocks.com/

During the week get out of the D. Ferndale and Royal Oak have good clothes & record shops, good restaurants bars etc. Lots of design professionals at Forte in Birmingham and Bastone in Royal Oak. If you're really hard up, try the Woodbridge area, Warehouse district, or Hamtramyck.

this is a city that one would suggest to get out of to visit the burbs?
interesting.
i've been thinking about whereto go next, and detroit definitely didn't come to mind, but that thought could probably be extended to a lot of other cities too.

Loads to do downtown. Greektown has great places to eat... try TheParthonon or PizzaPapalous for starters. Oslo ( http://www.osloworld.com/ ) for electronic music and sushi. As mentioned, the GardenBowl/MagicStick, as well as the Lager House are great rock bars. Jacoby's, and The Detroiter and great bars right downtown as well. CenterStreet Bar used to have decent jazz, not sure about now though.

If you have a car and can get out of the downtown area...
GO TO CRANBROOK which is in Bloomfeild Hills and visit their museum. RoyalOak and Ferndale both have a small more yuppie downtown area. AnnArbor is also a great place to spend the day. There is a lot to do around the UofM campus.
Also, the Detroit Art Musuem is really nice and right on Woodward. Close to CCS.
If you need a party to go to: http://www.dorkwave.com
If you are deperate, cross the bridge and go to Windsor on a Friday or Saturday night and party with the underage crowd.
For bands check out the Metrotimes listings... mostly at St.Andrews Hall, the State Theatre, or the Magic Stick for the downtown areas.
Best jazz is at Bakers Keyboard Lounge off 8mile, but you'll need a car to get there.

There are great photos to be taken of abandon buildings which saw their time in the 1920's.
Go see a wings game.
Have a drink on top the RenCen.

believe me, i know, i drive a motorcycle. but it's a different lifestyle when you can walk wherever you need + want to go.
- bgheen0
it is indeed..I just want to make sure people don't discount it entirely.
I lived in downtown chicago for awhile (Goldcoast) and I live in downtown Ann Arbor now. I find its the perfect mix. I can walk or bike to everywhere I need including work, the studio, etc and if I ever want to see regular movies, or get cheap groceries, or visit the new ikea coming in Canton, I jus hop in the car and go. It's a pretty cool mix actually.
Sometimes you just gotta drive and escape. Nothing beats taking the car up north and leaving it all behind,

The bronx.. block west from the cass cafe. Go there on a weekend, its packed. with almost all the lights off. great place to go drink..
Sundays are free bacon night, and I think on tuesdays someone goes and cuts hair.
I just got out of Cranbrook, and their museum and lecture series are pretty good, if you are into that kind of thing.. Go check out their design dept.. They are always up to some wack ass weird shit.
