So I hired a web developer to design a flash site for me (I put it up for crit earlier). There was no contract, only a verbal agreement for a certain amount. I paid half up front.
The problem is that he has quickly proven himself to be incompetent, which is a shame since he's a nice guy. He missed the deadline by a week (this was an actual deadline, not a moving target), and every time I ask him to do something it does not come out right. I had someone else look at the flash code and they said it was an utter mess.
At this point he's done a lot of work but I'm still not happy with the result. I know I need to pay him for the other half, it just sucks that I'll be paying for a site that I'm not at all happy with. Any thoughts/suggestions?
Thanks very much, sorry for the long post...

he's an idiot for creating the fla at 1024x768. that's the entire screen resolution, dude didnt take in account the browser header and footer bars. tell the dude to edit it. what is the big deal in that

too bad you dont have a contract.
most contracts have a kill clause that says, you can kill the contract at anypoint if you are unhappy for 70% of original value...
a little savings anyways.

yeah I know, never again.
Downloaded flash & dreamweaver demos. Havent done this stuff since school (3 years ago). kinda scary.
It might take me forever to figure it out, but at least I'll get what I want.

I asked him if he could shrink the site & he said he would have to rebuild the whole thing
??

make him do the changes else no pay.

suggestion:
next tme find a competent webdesigner that signs a contract, or else a trusty mate who you can do a team-work together.
- blaw0
make him do the edits. at least get yourself into the right ballpark.
the fact that he has to "rebuild the whole thing" will serve as a learning point for him, too (always get sign-offs at key milestones).

i hate to work with incompent designers.
missing the deadline by a week is out of question.

I agree. It's only the launch of my design studio we're talking about here.
Fresh out of money, looks like I'm doing it myself. I'd rather pay the guy & be done with him.
What a nightmare...

(Dec 28 05, 19:51)explain the situation to him and tell him what a horrible job he has done. Also add that you have do it all over again and you are not willing to pay for horrible work.
- tkmeister0
you need to be careful.
sometimes, it's better to hire more experienced flash developer at higher cost because he'll probably do it faster and quality will be better.
i just worked on the flash file done by jr designer. it was so useless i basically started over. i reduced the file size to 25% plus all scripted.

next time i need a web guy, I'm posting it on here.

shilhous, btw, the swf isn't really all that much too big since we're talking about a fullscreen popup. It was just a bit too big, honestly I fixed it with margins and shaving about 20 pixels off the height/width.
The original designer just didn't know what he was doing. Dude would copy and past huge chunks of copy from Illustrator, meaning they're shapes inside of flash, instead of Text.
Another time he used a whole jpg instead of doing a simple linebreak.
I've redone the site for gramme, should be live soon. I shaved off about 100kb in size and basically made things faster/smoother/better.

fate rox the mic.
fixed splash page, improved animations, pared down file size & visual size. New tagline of course.
more changes to come, fixing the blurry text tomorrow & getting a new dang loading animation (i know, that yellow thing looks like crawling piss)
til tomorrow... thanx everyone for comments/support/disses.
I heart NT!
