anyone know of a resource on how to do this in (d)html/javascript? basically, in html, i want to have a div with a flash drop down menu sit over different flash underneath it, but not in the same swf. the html would have to embed 2 swf's.
i've poked around a few tut's on hot to lay flash over html, but nothing so far about flash over flash

it might be possible in theory using css and z-index positioning. here's some info:

you can put two div's both with flash in, and give them a z-depth in the CSS.
I think it only works in IE on a PC.

why not load one swf into the other?

you can place javascript over flash, like in if a drop-down falls over a flash piece by using wmode=transparent in the embed tag, but I am thinking that it might be a problem for flash over flash especially if they need to go over eachother back and forth.
I'd go over to ultrashock and ask this one cause if anyone has an answer it is nutrox...

thanks all. i've been playing around with it for a bit now, once with javascript embedding a div and the other with just z-index's all to no avail. it overlays the other flash only i resize the browser in FF and not at all on IE. can't imagine the cross browser probs though.
i'd love to load one into the other in flash, but it's supposed to be a global nav and there might be regular html under it somewhere else in the site.

nest your swfs where you can, use css to control div layers where you can't.
this is nested flash:

Set the bottom movie to wmode=opaque and the top one to wmode=transparent then use the z-index. "Should" work.

(Feb 14 06, 08:50)I guess it worked? : )
- jpea0
yup :)
works like a charm

i feel kinda dumb actually that it worked, cause i was setting the wmode of the top one to transparent, but didn't touch the bottom one. didn't realize it would affect things on top of it.

Well now you wont ever feel dumb again, at least when it comes to stacking flash movies ;)

Hi,
Thanks for the info. It saved my time a lot.
I have another problem...
I am not able to click the links (HTML links) behind the top flash in Firefox (Mac & Windows) and Safari (Mac). Can anybody help me to solve this problem.
Thanks.
- jpea0
It's not possible since Flash takes the highest depth on a page. Also, wow, you dug up a thread from more than 3 years ago. nice work :)

I'm pretty sure the SWF will capture the clicks every time, even when set to transparent bg.
Maybe a solution here is to have the links actually on top of the Flash (hard to say without seeing your design)

Thanks for your replys...
If you check this site in Firefox and Safari you might be able to find my problem... http://v3.dev.superchannel.ca/
I can't click on any one of the link that is behind the transparent flash (like on scroller (middle of the page), Premiering this month, Theme Nights (right side blocks))
I am not a flash guy. But I have the resources to do stuff in flash. Please let me know if you find a way to solve this problem.
Thanks.

It looks like the Flash movie is somehow overlapping the right hand area. If you can just set it to fit the width of the left column, should be OK.
- phpdev280
Here the thing is it should start in the middle of the page and then vanish / sit on the right column (rectangular banner ads)....
If I change the width.. the actual flash file changes its display area....
Thanks.

If you have access to the flash source file, change it's scale mode and stage alignment so that when you change its dimensions in the html, it won't scale down.
