same here, i get them about once every two years during high stress times.
i have always used hydrocortizone to calm the pain.
i'm gonna make sure my kid gets chicken pox full blown.. cause shingles are the worst.

i've had chicken pox and then caught the shingles, too, off of my gran when she was dying and i wouldn't leave her side.
:(
they're similar, but shingles are worse and very painful and itchy. but you *can* get them even if you've had chicken pox! true!

I had it once, very mild case though, but felt rubbish for days.

I'm amazed so many here have had them--I'd always heard that only the elderly and/or immune compromised, such as cancer patients, got them

yeah. mine lasted a week and I still have slight scars on my forehead (lucky me).
I got some superstrength painkiller from the doctor. Those and an XBOX were how I spent that week.

ps
shingles and chicken pox are the same virus (bug? thingy?), or at least the same family. once you get chicken pox, the virus never leaves your body, things like stress will kick in shingles.

i had it recently as well, the virus is transmitted through your nervous system, this is why you get them in funny lines, and in isolated areas.
they burn like hot oil being dropped on your skin, in some cases anyway.
You have to treat the pain (according to my doctor) because otherwise, as its in your nerves and the sensation can stay for the rest of your life. seems bizarre really, but i guess its like amputees felling their limbs after they been removed.
my doctor recomended ibuprofen and related painkillers. try some voltarol. good stuff.
get well soon

sheesh, fairly common then! I'd never heard of them until i started getting well itchy last week. Now I'm covered in massive blotches of blisters all down the right side of my belly. Can hardly lie down it's so painful!
Just been to docs and she gave me some acliclover treatmeant, some sleeping pills and some strong cocodamol!
Is weird cos I didn;t really feel run down or anything....just came on really suddenly!
Oh well, will just try and go with the pain, thanks for the support :)

when they first started appearing, i thought they were flea bites (because my dog slept on the bed with me). But he had no fleas and a few days later they turned into the welt-looking things.

Yeah, same here! I thought they were flea bites. But wee Hamish aint got em so i started to get a tad worried!
I reckon i have about 12 big clusters of blisters that ache whenever anything touches them!!
AAARRRRGGGHHH!!!!

did they just stay on one side of your body? my doctor said it was normal for them to.
- kev_charlton0
Yeah, the right hand side of my fat gut....all the way from me bellybutton to my spine!
Has anyone got a legitimate source that says they can be fatal....i'm kecking my pants here!

i had it when i was 12, and you get it every 50 years. have fun with that. i suggeset the liquid medicine, it tastes like bananas.

I just got over them ... very mild case (itchy more than painful) ... but have heard they can be a bitch ... get the doctor to perscribe Valtrex ASAP as you can kill the virus if you catch it fast enough ... and they should also give you T3's and another drug called Gabopentin specifically for nerve pain

jesus christ, all you people have had shingles? how the hell do you get shingles in the first place? i don't want to get that shit.
- kev_charlton0
Apparently you get it when you are run down. Is basically chicken pox that has laid dorment in your system for years, but it comes back with a vengeance!
Cheers for the link, has eased my worries a bit!

the worst part for me, besides the intense pain, was that it took 5 days to be diagnosed. the docs thought I had cancer before his nurse told him I had shingles.
stupid doctors.

my mom had the shingles...it really bothered her. that was 6 years ago and once in a while she still feels the affected nerves and says if feels like marching ants.
