get your shit out there. no one will come to you if you just have a website.
you may need to work for free for awhile, just to get your name out there.
new to freelancing = the world's bitch.

Call Marketing companies.
Call Design Firms.
Tell eveyone you know.
Keep your eyes and ears open.
Go to Networking events.
Open the phone book and start cold calling.Don't necassarily ask straight up if they have work. Ask if you can come meet people and show them what you do. Have a strong leave behind piece. Follow up and thanks them.
Make sure you have your portfolio together, and your own marketing material before you start.

screw that brooke, thats terrible advise. get an agent, build relations by finding work on different places, either it's online or offline through people you know. if you are desperate, invest. by that i mean: design some calendars, fun postcards, stickers, send your portfolio to art/creative directors and such; things that will make people think/remember you. if you do things like that work will come right back if you're good.
how are people supposed to know you're a designer or even exist if you just sit on your ass and don't expose yourself.
i can understand that after one's been working with agencies for long enough that people know you and contact you when they need something.

saying that 'it finds you' is utter horsehit, yes, it does once you have gone through the process of putting yourself out there and gaining a reputation, but thats what you have to do, use contacts, get onto agency books, have a great website, apply for everything you see that interests you.
Basically, you reap what you sow.
- brooke0
Well ... I guess it works differently for everyone.
- rasko40
I am sure it does work for you like that now brooke, but are you saying that when you started out that you just sat at home doing nothing and work came in?
that is pretty rare
- brooke0
I guess it is pretty rare.
Well, sorry for my crappy advice.

don't take such a laid back approach if you're really looking to start working. you gotta hustle!
see if you can set up informational interviews if they are not looking for someone right away. you have to totally get your name and work out there to the right people.
hook up with a recruitor who is going to work with you, there are some out there. :)know what you want (how you work, how to discuss your work, who you want to work with etc.) and get out there! good luck
