so on my g5/panther at home my ichat messages started showing up in what looks like cyrillic text instead of english, and now on my g5/tiger at work (after installing some helvetica fonts included with some one sheets i'm working on) the same thing is happening except it's also affectting my mail.app now.
my IT guy mentioned it has something to do with helvetica conflicts.
anyone have experience with this and maybe have a fix?

Hey,
I did have a similar problem yet it was about 2 years ago and have no idea how I fixed it! So for that I apoligise, however I do remember I got the info I needed by posting at the mac forums on the apple site.
here's a link.http://discussions.apple.com/ind…
Best of luck.

I had the same problem with Helvetica Fractions in which I ended up uninstalling the Fractions part of the font from my Suitcase. That fixed it. For some reason it always references Fractions first instead of Regular Helvetica.

helvetica is the devil...had a similar issue, but it was a certain type of helvetica that i had which was corrupted. it gave me that same look as fractions yet i didn't have helvetica's fractions installed.

great, now none of my microsoft products will launch
all because i deleted helvetica fractions
what the fuck kind of program relies on helvetica fractions to start up

Got me man. I have deleted the fractions font on three G5's at work and on my iBook at home and haven't had any problems.
Maybe some things happen for a reason.

Run a cache cleaner as Horton suggested. It's your best bet.

the problem is the standard fonts required for the "insert clever/stupid developers name for part of OSX that runs the text engine" part of OSX. Can't remember what it's called but look it up online. "font conflicts mac OSX". I've basically figured out that there are certain fonts that crash certain apps. For eg, address book needs helvetica (that's helvetica standard NOT HelNeue gotit!), but if you have certain versions of helvectica or even some vs of helNeue it'll crash it at start up. Same deal with mail.app.
First thing to do is find out the list of standard fonts ie the ones that come pre-installed with OSX and the ones that "that" kernal part needs. Then turn off everything else, all of your crazy fonts. Then switch em back on one at a time, you'll need a notepad, until you find the culprit, then trash it. In mac's wisdom they allow us eccentric designers to actually turn off certain essential fonts, causes big probs with essential apps.
hope that helps.
I have problems all the time with wacky fonts, but I just know now which ones screw things up.
