'flattening' in illustrator

I am importing things to flash and are doing this by exporting to .swf in illy.
My object has a clipping path and flash just can't make sense of it.
Is there a way to flatten things in illustrator to a simple vector (from clipping masks, compound etc).
Also what kind of workflow do you guys like to use when getting stuff into flash?

object -> expand appearance or flatten transparency
?

Save a png fron Photoshop. Export a path to use as a mask from Illustrator as a .swf to use in Flash.

Expand appearance is greyed out.
and exporting to a raster file is pointless as I need a vector.Flatten transparency didn't do anything.
