If you want to understand westerns (as well as all american cinema) you have to watch John Ford.
When Orson Wells was asked what he did to prepare for Citizen Kane he said "I studied the American Masters, John Ford, John Ford and John Ford"
Star Wars lifted its first 20 minutes from "The Searchers", just replaced horses with robots and the Native Americans with sand people.
Stagecoach is great.
My favorite movie of all time is "My Darling Clemintine" with Henry Fonda.
The main theme in the western is the clash of civilization and wildness and mans place between those two forces. Everyone should watch John Ford's movies, they are the best.
