I work for an Email Marketing company (i know...) and today the big boss was looking to see how the company was doing on search engines. Right on the front page was a link to my portfolio site instead of his company (eek). He got really arsey and told me to take it down, something about the work on it being intellectual property of the company! Wtf? Apparently it states in my contract this is the case, so what the hell should I do? More than half my work was done at this place!

go back and read your contract. alot of companies do that
but you can show your work to a perspective enmplyer without making it public
- jox0
There's really not an awful lot you can do if it's stated in the contract.
BUT, hopefully you have enough stuff that will get you to an interview (which, by the way I think you should schedule asap) and then bam, you flash your V1AGRA EMA1LZ!

Thing is i didn't make it public...was on a seperate folder on my URL...MSN must have picked it up somehow...
How would you go about not making it public?

yeah, what are your plans? sounds like you're not digging the full time work if you're pushing your personal portfolio online (and outranking your company – funny!)... you sure as hell can't promote yourself for side work using company projects if you signed a no-compete in your contract
- jox0
meta robots=no? (or is it "none"?)
- jox0
Thats some nice work you got there, btw.

Ah, it isn't the site listed on here by the way...that is my 'freelance business'. This was my personal portfolio. Just showcasing my work, not promoting my self for work or anything...
Have tried the no robots thing before to little success. Am gonna have to re-do it all in flash aint i?
bugger.

lesson one: never let on to your employer know that you're even contemplating looking for another job or showing off "your" work to the public
lesson two: never let you're boss see your website. change the url or add a passcode.
lesson three: because you didn't do lesson one or two, you should start looking for another job.

show us the site

Have had to take it down, is also not completed, hence it being in a different folder.
Have a plan, redo the main body in flash so it's not readable by search engines, then use a different folder in my url (e.g /portfolio/).
Foolproof.
me thinks?

you can show your work to potential employers. he should pay you to not show your work
- Jalines_father0
different folder? huh?
I'm confused - are you placing your portfolio on your company host account?
- Jalines_father0
and yes - your 'work' is your work. If it's design you were involved in then by all means feel free to display yourself (unless you sign a no-compete WHICH IS STUPID - why sign away your right to be an artist?)

everytime I hear that song I have to take a dump - I think it has something to do with the harmonic frequency created by the 'cat-skinning' of the B-52 chickies.

most people don't know this, but during the time stand was recorded and mastered, rem was experimenting with the brown noise
