thanks! yeah the 5050's are nice. we've refined them and will now offer set screws with them, too. everyone has different opinions on what is grippy. all depends on shoes, conditions, etc, and now with set screw pins, the 5050's are totally customizable and cover any condition/riding style.

Probably SL mate - as sweet as the ti ones look I should probably pay for the rest of the new rig.
Just hooked my girl up with some Mallets for her first clipless, she likes having the platform backup.
I'd heard about the new ones, didnt know they were customisable mind.

The Malettes have been straight up awesome. I have the gold and black sealed beearing 50/50's too. They came with interchangeable plates and extra pins which was a nice feature. I like 'em alot but I lost the screws out of one side on the second ride. I emailed someone at CB last week after a trip to Home Depot came up snake eyes for replacements. I've since added locktight to the others and someone m210's way is sending me some new screws.
Good stuff. Buy 'em.

sure. nothing wrong wit the candy sl. a nice solid spindle will give you a good solid ride.... not that much heavier then ti's. unless you race, that probably doesnt matter. even dh riders are starting to care about weight... we built special mallet 4ti's for steve peat! ;)

Peaty is a quick bastard. He dropped into A-line ahead of me last year and It was like 3 pedal stokes and he was gone. Must be the Ti.

sure is. jeebus.
we hope to be heading out to crankworx this year. we skipped last year, but now with the 5050, we should be there in full. can NOT wait. was there 2 years ago... i shed a tear when i left. true story.

So, what should a beginner like me get? I want a mountain bike, I'll be attempting this new hobby here in the lovely southwestern US (hiking is getting a little stale on the smaller loops)... what should a completely stupid person like me who has never owned a mountain bike start with? I went to a shop 4 days ago and talked to a guy that works there, and it was kind of like, "you can buy this, this or this within this price range", but with no rhyme or reason. He really didn't even ask me any questions and I felt like I had to lead the conversation, and I really didn't get much feedback from that...
So, what should a beginner look at? I'm 32, 240lbs., so I doubt I'll be looking to do any tricks or drops; just need a bike to learn on...
Also, what are some good trails? All this bike talk, where should I go ride?
- DSmith0
Yeah...I love that place. It opened this last weekend so I'm going to head up on Saturday with cash in hand for my seasons pass.
Crankworx:
I'll be there work permitting. Seeing Berreclothe 360º a 20 foot gap was probably the single sweetest move I've seen anyone pull off in person. You'reguaranteed to see progressio every year at Crankworx no matter what bike gods you pray to whereit be XC,DJ,FR,4X,DH.

point5- bootleg canyon outside of vegas has great riding.... its it bootleg or boulder canyon? i cant remember, but we go there every year for interbike. great riding if you can beat the heat!
- milo0
Interbike, Crankworx.. I suppose you were at Sea Otter too?
I'm not the jealous type - but for that, I'm willing to make an exception.
point5 - what's your budget?
- radar0
Point5, I just got started in the last couple of months, I'm 6'3" 230lbs and I started on a 24" Specialized Hard Rock Pro Disc, it was in the $700 range - and a good starter bike for a mix of trail and Urban riding that I do.
- Point50
I would say my budget is up to about $1000. Like I mentioned before, I walked into the bike shop and felt like I was in an alien spaceship man. All I knew was what looked pretty, you know? And the bike guy wasn't much help; He meant well, but I think he was used to dealing with people who are already knowledgable about bikes.
Some friends of mine say that I should just wait until the end of the year and buy a used one from some of these shops and tour companies, but my problem with that is two-fold:
1. I really don't want to wait until Sept. to buy a bike
2. Can I really trust a used bike to be worth the 60% lesser price tag than a new one?

Crankworx is going to be absolute madness/ gong show this year... the sport has fully saturated media mainstream here. Every kid in BC and their bike will be there.
- m2100
milo- i was not at sea otter this year, but i have been in the past. i'll be at my 2nd eurobike this year and thats a great show to check out if you can get to germany.
crankworx is awesome. we have some cool plans for that event...
- DSmith0
Yeah it should be pretty aweome this year. I am going to do the Enduro DH for the first time this year. 20 minutes of cycling chaos . Man I need to hit the gym.
- Point50
radar, that bike sounds exactly like something I'm looking for. I will definitely look into it. I've been taking notes (seriously) on almost everything mentioned in here; except for the uber-speak about shit I could not understand. I hope to be back in this thread next year and talking mad shit.
Thanks guys.

for a grand, new I'd be tempted to go for a Specialized Stumpjumper, the 06 models are more but you could go hunting for an 05 model.
You'll be able to find an 06 FSR within that though. On the other hand - second hand, you could get a lot of bike for that money, but whatever you do go & check it out first.
For reviews & stuff http://www.mtbr.com/
is the place to go.

Good thread.
Jealous of you guys over the ponk mind.
