i'm not a developer but i've got a client who has a web app they want me to re skin. the client keeps showing me links of their competitors (who's stuff looks a lot better) and is written in php. i'm wondering if php is more customizable? thoughts?

short answer: no.
for front end stuff it doesn't make a lick of difference.
I think the .net framework in asp might actually make things a bit easier.

anything you can do in php you can do in asp and vice versa. there are differences in terms of server stuff and blah blah blah but you don't need to bother with that here.
the real question is that asp/.net programmers are harder to come by and charge more because people aren't using php on the enterprise level; this is because there are more business level products for asp and jsp then php (think PC vs Mac)
SO, if you want to do some techincal stuff on the cheap go php. but if you are stuck with asp, don't worry about WHAT can be done, more WHO is going to do it.

DeviceUnseen NAILED it. This is the major problem I've experienced personally as well as looking at some of my clients.
They are all advised to get on .NET and no doubt it's definitely a great way, however in the long run, it is definitely much much hard to maintain because of lack of programmers, high rates etc.
I am building a service right now and going with php. There's really nothing you can't do with it. Some things are maybe a lot easier to do in .NET but I don't want to bang my head when my main programmer goes MIA.
For business there's nothing worse then that.
