In HTML is there a reliable way of centering an image and stretching it fullscreen so that it doesn't distort... but centres accordingly?

css:
BODY{
background: #000 url(image.gif) no-repeat 0 50%;
}

oops, it would be 50% 50% at the end if you wanted it to be in the total center of the screen.

it can't be as easy as that can it?
will have a go!

seems to me that only positions it in the middle but not stretch it, i think..
- Engage0
thats what i thought... and yes it only centres it
- ldww0
oh duh! i thought it said you did NOT want to streach it.
i have only seen a streach without distorting work the best in flash.
if you distort an image from tis normal size in IE it will be very pixelated.

not if its a big picture... i just need to keep the ratio the same
