Hi there,
Does any of you design wizards, know how to make the 60's looking rounded shapes, Hort did for Wallpaper hotel.
http://www.hort.org.uk/en/articl…I have been trying to make them for quite some time now, but I can't seem to find the right technique. Please help!

am i missing something? do you just mean those blobs?
have you tried using the pen tool in illustrator?

Photoshop or Illustrator?

Hi there Vespa,
Thx for the reply.
I know how to make them using the pen tool, but I want them to be more precise.I am sure that there is an easier and more precise way to make them. Do you know any other way?

Illustrator

how about make some circles and then free distort?

i've been wondering the same thing, i can make squares in illustrator, but i'm really looking for more of a rectangle (i really like 1930's rectangles, but any era will do)

glad to help. may your free distortions be paragons of retro simplicity.

I am sure that a guy that can come up with a diss that funny, is able to make rectangles too...

ok - I know what you mean - they can be a bit of a pain, can't they?
Personally, I find I can get 'better' results from creating the forms in Photoshop then bringing the paths through. However, if I want quick results from Illy, I can just create a circle, then 'Path > Add Points' a couple of times so that I've got more anchor points to play with. Then it's just a case of manually selecting the anchors and shifting them around tiwth the keyboard.
Ideally though, I'd use a combination of Guassian Blur and Levels in Photoshop to create smoothed forms which look a little better.
Start by making a new channel. Create a hard-cornered geometric shape with the Polygonal lassoo, then make a copy of this layer underneath. On the copied layer, play with Guassian blur until your form has been suitably rounded (this will probably take more than one pass, so don't expect it to look like a pebble first time!). Set the blur, then press Ctrl/Apple F to repeat the filter a few times - gradually you will see the jaggedness of your inital form disappearing. After a couple of Guassian passes, show the original, un-Blurred channel in addition to the currently selected, Blur'd Channel. Open your levels box (Ctrl/Apple + L) then tighten up the dark and light ends so they meet somewhere in the middle - this is where showing the original, unblurred comes in handy as you can use it as a guide.
Don't tighten up the ends too much, as you will need to maintain some level of 'alias-ness' (ie. you don't want pixellated jaggy edges), then use create a selection from the channel and convert your channel to a path - then copy the path to illustrator.
Bear in mind that I'm on old versions of Illy and PShop, so there's probably a quicker CS-Illy only way to do this! :)
(yes, it's long winded - sorry)

Or indeed, just draw by hand / free distort.
*coughs awkwardly, exits quickly.
- Nairn0
Or. Hand draw a polygon using the pen tool, then Stylize > Round Corners.
*coughs.

Thx a lot for the respons Nairn. Your method will come in really handy if i'm in need of a specific shape. Thank you for taking the time to write all that. You rock!

Thx a lot Vespa. They already are ;)

yet another way:
draw a circle and select it > filter/distort/roughen/
set your detail to 0 and points to smooth and mess with the size setting to get your desired shape.

use Macromedia FREEHAND ...you sound like you are trying to create 3-D environments, illy doesnt have the usage of the "z" axis. it may be easier to use Freehand in order to accompllish your needs.
for accuracy and the like...
- Nairn0
Don't listen to e-pill - he smokes horrific quantities of weed, then comes on here blathering like a gibber-monkey.
'freehand', 'z-axis', 'accuracy'
- what on earth?!
;)
