What if all those houseflippers I've see on TLC installed solar roofing shingles on each house they buy? Seems like people would be willing to pay the extra $$ because the cost for the shingles would just be part of their mortgage.

well that was random.

Nice idea, but it adds a lot. People are inherently cheap bastards and don't care much for anything but themselves, so we have little need for energy conservation and drive fat SUVs 50+ miles to work everyday. Mostly speaking about Americans, of course.
However, if you can convince people that it will save them money, then you have a winner.
Generally speaking, it'll take at least 7 years to break even on energy costs with solar. For flippers, that's just not worth it (and again, most people are cheap and short sighted, so not many panels anywhere).
It's changing, though, costs are coming down. I just worked on a condo project that uses solar for 30% of their energy and the prices are coming in at market rate for the units.
If you know you'll be somewhere for more than 7 years (and no one ever thinks they will be), then you should really consider it. There are superb tax incentives, too.

what is a house flipper?

Sorry Ponyboy, I was just thinking out loud :) I saw Gore's movie last night and it kinda depressed me.
A house flipper is someone who buys a distressed house, fixes it up in a few weeks and then sells it.

How were you involved in that apartment project mbr?

Dunno about the US but in the UK solar power is a massive cost (we're talking £10,000's+) To get any real power into the house to make a difference. The technology is getting better but we're way off yet.
Wind is more economically viable at the moment

I simply did the marketing renderings for that project, but I am working on a loft project that will incoporate solar (designing the architecture, drawings, feasibility studies, marketing, renderings, id and website)

my pop's wife just spent about $25000 to get about 90% of their power from solar panels
