hey... i'm looking to register a domain.
but the domain i want to register is squatted in all it's variations: .net, .com, .co.za (south africa). the .co.za domain is squatted by some Turkish company no less, and the .com is owned by tucows, but not used.
any other extensions worth considering?
has anyone here succesfully bought a squatted domain?

well you can either prove you have rights to the domain (whether through administrative or legal processes), or.... wait.
and setup a backorder on the domain if you really want it.

we've successfully aquired (or had de-listed) a few domains that were infringing on our rights, just through administrative actions (contacting registrars, hosts, and sometimes the domain registrant)... not sure if thats applicable to your situation.

thanks for the info.
unfortunately it's not a trademark or registered company even, so can't claim legal right to the domain name.i have tried to make contact before - no reply - but i think the domain has actually changed ownership. my first choice would be the .com so i'll probably try contacting them.

my domain gaberubin.com was squatted by tucows.com, but only through some major detective work did i uncover that it was in fact tucows.com
after the domain was stolen, visting gabeubin.com would take you to one of those typical search engine sites with no contact info. somehow i managed to track it back to tucows, then through a very small link on the homepage of tucows.com i found this site:
http://www.domaindirect.com/inde…
which basically let me buy my domain back. once i bought it, it automatically remembered my original DNS settings and host info. so, they basically are buying domain names for dirt cheap, then holding them to sell back to people or to new customers for $10 a pop
pretty lame scam

You could get whateveryouwant.za.net, for free from http://www.za.net or choose something like .org / .info / .biz or even .tv, here is a overview of all the various 'Country Code Top Level Domains' ( CCTLDs ) at IANA: http://www.iana.org/cctld/cctld-…

check out http://www.sedo.com or http://www.namedrive.com for buying a domain from 'domainers' - ppl who speculate on domains.
those site have facilities to make offers for the domain and will allow you to investigate them in most instances i.e the number of hits the domain is receiving (which affects its value)

Dot CC is a pretty good domain which is really country specific andthere is still a lot of available domains on there.
A little bit more expensive though.

no problem foreign, check out the parking if you have domains 'lying' around - you could earn a bit from them
