to each their own, but I don't think the zune can compete with the i-pod. too much culture and style.
the only edge that the zune would be able to offer is price.
i think the ipod will always win on design and function. i'll bet the next gen ipod will make the zune look like a transistor radio.

that does sound pretty awesome meeklo, and you're probably correct, we will buy the new ipod in three months time.
but tomorrow, you'll have to download the first of many patches to your zune to make it work.
;)

aren't they announcing the wide touch screen ipod ?

(Nov 15 06, 10:48)I agree, no mp3 player out there can compete with the ipod.
But I dont agree that ipods always win on function.
ipod just recently offered the video upgrade, how many mp3 players out there had that for years.. and in bigger screens??
see my point..

(Nov 15 06, 10:49)trust me, I know that..
that is way I switched to mac in 95. and just for the record I have an ipod, I dont plan to buy a zune.My point is, usually to compete with a product, you add more features, make it better, add stuff that the competition does not have, etc.
I don't see that happening with the ipod, they did an amazing job with branding. Adding new features just doesn't cut it anymore.

the only way to beat ipod is to make a (now) old school style shuffle made of solid durabil glass that shines like a glow stick and has bluetooth & XM/sirus compatible and a 2MPixel Cam.
and maybe came with all the WU TANG albums :-)))))))))

Zune won't kill the iPod- here's why:
I asked my friend if he was gonna get a Zune cause his iPod just broke. He asked me "What the hell is a Zune?"
That represents most people, I would say. Combine that with the fact that the ipod was designed to be lifestyle appliance, not a piece of electronics- makes it accessible to people who have no idea what bitrate or USB 2.0 are. And that's something a company with zero cool factor, like Microsoft, will be hard pressed to compete with.

I think it looks good and the wireless transmit and radio features are long overdue in the market.

don't like the look of it.
bet the ID & site was designed on a Mac. Ha!!

tenpointtwo, that's not a valid argument at this present time. you may be right, but you have to give it some time for the Zune to get going. I'm pretty sure this is what happened when the X-Box was first introduced...

Zune can take all the time it needs. It's too late. Game over.
"The long and the short of it is nobody has proven they can beat Apple at their own game, and many have tried. What makes MS any different? The path to success in dethroning the iPod is not to try to do the same thing Apple does, only better, because that's not possible. It's like starting up a new car company and saying your goal is to outsell the Toyota Camry. You'll never do it."

I'm not suggesting that Zune will take over, because it won't (not from the iPod, anyway). Just that I think we'll have to wait and see what specific things will be a part of Zune beforehand.

I liked the interface shots I saw on youtube, the font seems to be a DIN rip. The device doesn't look good, but neither does windows nor 95% of computers out there.
I am having problem finding goodlooking (and goodsounding) computer speakers, they produce shit and people buy it.

For the extra bulk added by the wifi (its bigger than the biggest iPod) it seems a bit of a waste that you can only use it to send 3 play tracks to people. Why the hell can't you use it to sync with your computer?
I don't understand why they are trying to force a social aspect into a solitary act just because its trendy, if I actually wanted to communicate with people around me I wouldn't be listening to an mp3 player.

No portable hard drive functionality = Fail.
