nyc has so much to offer and CBGBs gathered so much dirt and grime in its vicinity that the areas surrounding it was not safe for anyone.

(Nov 27 06, 17:20)I'd have to agree with that. The neighborhood has evolved into an area where that type of stuff is infrequently supported.
But I left NYC years ago

Yeah I heard that too, mental...little bit odd.

My god..how old are you? The Bowery is practically Yuppie-ville these days - not safe??? Not SAFE? Geez..you shoulda tried going there in the middle of the 80's...the only thing giving that neighborhood character was CB's...I tell you, you kids have no idea of how good things are..

yes the area has changed.
it wasnt CBGBs itself that kept the area from being something better than it could be, but it was the fact that the homeless and crackhead and prostitutions and squatters and heroin dealers and addicts and all that crap that keeps the area seedy.
im 33 aqnd i lived in nyc all my life. there is nothing more than goodness i want to see for the city i live in and call home.
its funny how you describe LES as yuppyville, to me that is the worst stereo-typical description of that area i ever heard...you claim 80s but really that area only turned in the last few years which would leave us still in 2000 after 9-11.
im not sure how long you lived here or visited seems more a better thought as the 80s drop was bad.
its all good!! our city is changing to a positive direction and yes its sad to see an era of good music culture leave our city but our city holds so many new futures that will make new histories.
as i said im happy to see that end of bowery finally cleaning up and getting rid of the old seedier memories of yesterday giving a possibility of something grander for that area and the people that live in that area. from the businesses to the home-owners to the renters i believe everyone wants to live in a cleaner and safe city.
nyc i love you!!!

e-pill I grew up in NY (I'm 38 now), and live in Gramercy for more than five years now..I was just saying that back in the 80's the Bowery WAS really scary and it's slowly been getting better since then, and yeah it's bohemian chic and mostly safe these days...for someone to call that area "seedy" NOW just seemed ridiculous to me...

38!

i agree with you, but i also feel that its the grime of that one block that keeps that end of the bowery from becoming the shining star that the rest of that area has become.
i stand corrected in my assuptions of who i thought you are.
and yes i salute my elder!!
its all good and all smiles!!!

Yeah, I agree..but it's that little bit of grime that still has the heart and soul of the old NYC for me I suppose that's basically gone now..and that's a good rthing in a lot of cases, but a little sad in others..And stop making me feel old!! I bumped into an old high school bud I haven't seen in ten years and he had a Homer Simpson head, and what was left of his hair was all white grey..I was like "fuck man..when did you get old!" hahaha..and then we started talking about Judas Priest at the meadowlands, 1985...good times...hehehe

I agree...
... blueOne is old.
*salutes the elderlyOne :)

oh i then totally agree, i also feel the beginning destruction of nyc culture started when mayor guilanni took away our civil liberties and took away all the fundings to all the arts of the city.
he made the new ZERO TOLLERANCE law in effect which made all the great clubs and bars be restricted and smoking laws and all that goodnesss we new yorkers and the bridge and tunnel kids loved nyc for is aLL gone.
i miss going out on a friday and comming back on a monday from the after hours clubs that are so different today.
...anyways im still in japan!!!
:)

back in '94 the EV/LES was pretty scary but nowadays things are getting more and more gentrified not unlike everywhere else.
respect to CBGBs but all good things should come to an end. The place was kinda of an armpit and when my friends played there a few months back, there was more people buying t-shirts outside then at the show. not sure if CBGBs Las Vegas is going to be as punk rawk nor the CBGBs store on St Marks.
