The Doors - Costa Mesa, CA - Summer of 2003

Three of my friends and I drove up from San Diego to see The Doors in Costa Mesa. I don't even like the band that much, but a live show is a live show, so I went. We all ate mushrooms on the way up, so we'd just started feeling the effects when we got out of the car. There was a fairground nearby with all these rides, and I wanted to go and just walk around and get all freaked out before the show started. However, one of the girls we were with started tripping a little too hard for her own good. he didn't want to leave the car and insisted we smoke some more weed before going in to the show. I reluctantly agreed. We all get back into the car, and no more than 5 minutes after we pack a bowl and start smoking, 3 bike cops surround my car, and one comes right up to the window. Needless to say, as I roll down the window to talk to him, a giant cloud of smoke blows right into his face. We all get pulled out, searched, the car gets searched, and as this is happening and we're lined up outside 3 cops mounted on horses come up. By now, we're all starting to trip pretty hard, so seeing horses is not a good thing when you're trying to keep your composure. I thought we were all going to lose our shit, especially the girl who didn't want to leave the car. She looked like she was either going to die or freak out completely, and while the cop was telling us all about how we could go to jail for furnishing marijuana, one of the horses takes a shit right there like 5 feet from us. In the end, we all got citations (thank God for California laws) and had to go to court and pay some money and sit in a class for a Saturday afternoon. We saw the concert, and it sucked. I hate Costa Mesa, and The Doors.

Hmmm lots of good concert stories. One comes to mind right away.
Lineup-suicideal tendencies, candlebox, alice in chains and metallica.

Having a good time, surfing on the mosh, trying to stay back from being pulled off the top by security when a headbanger dude that was having an issue with 20,000 plus people messing his hair decided to start punching me in the back of teh head near the front. By this time security had me by the ankle just as I turned to confront him. I gave him a good square shot right to the nose and security saw it, before I know it I am out the side door. I spend the next 20 minutes trying to jump the fence with some other crashers, but security was too tight. So I decided to leave them behind and try something else. Although my shirt had been ripped off and I was soaking wet, I still had some money tucked away and when i got around front I found out they were still selling tickets. Just as I was almost at the ticket booth a bouncer pulled me from teh line. I had thought he picked me out becuase I obviously had already been inside by the look of me. He asked if I was going to buy a ticket. I said yes and he told me to follow him. He escorted me back inside and I slipped him a twenty (tickets were $40)

I only ened up missing around 4 songs.

    Damn, I used to go to so many concerts when I was at college; here's just a few;

    Cure: Wembley Arena (disintegration tour
Sonic Youth: Liverpool Royal Court (Goo tour), supported by Teenage Fanclub (luv that band), also the Youth 'Dirty' tour in the early nineties.
    Various London gigs
    Mudhoney
    Lemonheads
    Hair & Skin Trading Company
    Moose
    Galaxie 500
    Nirvana
    Babes in Toyland
Marillion (Yeah - I know, wierdly I once sat for the drummer and got a free tkt to their first non Fish gig)
    Fish
    PJ Harvey
Ride (about a dozen times - I used to do tee-shirts for them and my friend Claude is mentioned in the credits on their first album
    SLowdive
    Dinosaur Jr
    Blur
    Spiritualized (soooo many times0
Boo Radleys (supported by an obnoxious band called Oasis) I think that was a free gig in Preston
    Charlatans (guest list)
Pixies at Crystal Palace bowl (guest list because Ride were support)
    Lush
    Jane's Addiction (Ritual tour)
    Jesus and Mary Chain
    Primal Scream
    Mercury Rev
    Spectrum
Verve (first London gig - they were special but everything Richard Ashcroft has done since has been dogshit
Canned Heat* I'll come back to this one
    Badly Drawn Boy
    Roni Size

then a very long barren spell - Jersey doesn't really do gigs (except for the newly formed Jersey Live festival which I didn't make)

    Then the 2 best concerts;
Tom Waits in Paris 2000 - a small intimate venue of about 2,000 capacity. Seated but you could move freely down the aisles so I got as close to the great man as I'm ever gonna get.
Tom Waits in London Nov 2004 (took my wife who I met after we discovered a mutual appreciation of Tom Waits).

And that's it. Getting old, married and having kids has kind of put of stop to the 'ligging'.

Anyway that Canned Heat one is a story. My first job at a very small agency in Blackpool was to do a poster for Canned Heat in a Blackpool pub. I knew some of their songs and used lyrics in the poster design. As the client was the brewery I had free access to the gig. Being a pub, there was a pretty small audience. But after the gig I ended up sharing a bottle of JD with band. These were real hardcore 60's hippies. I have never had a bigger hangover.

Anyway, I've bored you all with my tales of my youth. Go, and enjoy yourselves.

    Prince w/ sheila E

I think i was in 4th grade and this was my 1st concert, my parents took my sister and some of her friends I really shouldn't have been there. Joints getting passed around all around me, Sheila E simulating giving a BJ to some dude she picked from the audience... LOL "Dad, whats she doing?" I think he just ignored my question...

Pulling apart the drumkit during a stage invasion during a Dirty 3 gig a few years back

driving to a rave on a beach with some of the Rephlex lads after an Aphex gig.

first gig. 12 years old. Neds Atomic Dustbin. Drunk on 2 cans of Cider. Crowd surfing. Getting sick down stairs. Kissing Girl.

  • lowimpakt0

    nearly forgot.

Meeting all of Sonic Youth on the street in Dublin before an outdoor gig when I was 16. "Hi, I'm Lee Ronaldo" best shit ever. Then meeting Kim inside the gig to continue the chat.

Seeing Nirvana for a second time. Actually no, that second gig was on the night he killed himself. what a waste of cash.

  • ourcommon0

i saw Sting play at the Pyramids of Giza at night.

  • JerseyRaindog0

Oh yeah, John Martyn. Man, he was so drunk...

  • kev_charlton0

Descendents at Reading Festival. First time I saw them live, and they were absolutely amazing. Then '3 colours red' came on after them and said over the speaker 'Now for some proper rock!', we all pissed our pants and threw oranges at them. Those were the days.

  • fooler0

    traut..
My wife +2 others had to leave the cat poer show here in portland because they ate too many pot brownies. 1 girl was sleeping, neck tossed back of the chair snoring. My wife and the other where histarically laughing at god knows what when the passed out girl wakes up and gets all paranoid they're laughing at her. They left about 3 songs into the set.

I don't have very many good ones, but my friends and I had to tell this drunken bitch off and refused to let her come to the front by shoving her back. We then proceeded to see her in other concerts and stores around Ottawa in the new few days, so it was awesome because she was clearly scared shitless of us.

There was also this psychotic guy who kept attacking people while crowd-surfing, and I got badly bruised from the concert bouncers (or whatever they're called) who kept jumping on top of the people in the front (which included me) to reach out and grab the douchebag in the back. He somehow came back into the concert about 4 times until the bouncers finally took him out somewhere for good.
