--------------------lets just say my job means I have to try to work with a fair amount of academic institutions. I regularly talk with people in industry and public sector who deal with a large amount of academic institutions.
it's a hot topic at the moment

because most design educators are pissed that either:
A. they didn't have the skills to make a career in the field.
B. they had killer skills and got left behind with the digital revolution.
it's a ego driven career, like it or not.

It's not all about the "Those that can do..." issue. It's a lot to do with the cash greedy institutions and the gradual creep of standards and strategic vision.
do I sound like a nerd?

Wow, sounds like you people had bad experiences... my prof's were great and I still keep in touch with them today.
I value every bit of my design education.

all my profs where all in the field and did all their teaching as steady income plus it looks good on their resume but yes some of them should have just stayed in the industry and not tought. You can know photoshop inside and out but presenting and teaching it might not come easy to them to share it with everyone else.
With my experiences just buy books and save your money!!

anyone wanna to see my rad calculator?
- skelly0
i always hate when people advise "just learn from books" because i had a great experience with teachers that could not happen teaching yourself. not saying you can't reach the professional level on your own, but great design teachers are out there.

the director of the department told me he wished me and my designs would "burn in hell."

no one said that what your profs tell you is the end all be all... in reality it's just another opinion, some people like stuff and some people don't.
I had one bad prof who belonged in 1950, but my others were fantastic. I am pursuing grad school so I have opportunities to teach. It's not an ego thing, I just really enjoy working with people and teaching, and I love design.

Cant teach someone how to be a designer, but you can try to open their minds up, look at things differently, and all the standard rules and bullshit no one ever foloows anyway, but I think all it does for anyone, is connects you with people, and teaches you time management and responsibility........Parsons is 128907389017432234 a semester to go to, never worth it

Design education is mostly crap because design is mostly crap.

In design school they teach you how to learn.
It's not a one-stop shop, at least the good ones aren't.
Tell me without lying that you're not still learning new things as you're working.
Our's is a practical, hands-on, performance-based industry.
No job is ever 100% the same.
In design school you should have learnt how to be industrious, resourceful, anal, expressive, and how to recognise bad from the good. Professionalism, business acumen and computer skills come later.
If your tutors weren't showing you how to at least achieve these traits then your own resourcefulness should have compensated and you'd have worked harder.
If your course sucks, then quit complaining and find a better one.
Those who complain at how crap their school was is akin to sportman who blame their coaches for a bad game.

I don't think this is true. You can take what you want, there is no simple this-is-how-to formula. Those classes are bullshit anyhow. My first tutors in my post-high school course were some of the best human beings I've ever met. Maybe I lucked out, but my tutors have always been fantastic, or have something to offer

"In too many schools design subjects continue to be taught by men who are often already out of touch with the current realities of design..."
