I'm fed up with my current job which I've been in for about a year and a half.
I want to look around for something better, but will stay where I am until I have something definite to move to.
I'm really serious about finding a more suitable job and I want my website to show the best of my work as it's often the first time a prospective employer wiill see my work. I haven't really changed my site since I was graduating from uni. I made it myself and I'm really not a web person.
I want to change it, take of a lot of the old work on there and put some new stuff up, I also want it to look better and work simply.
Any suggestions? I don't mind the idea of a 1 page folio, as long as it is simple and can store quite a bit of work. Remember I'm not a web designer, so it's not about the site, just about the work
thanks for your advice.

well, I actually quite like your site, but imo you have to change the textual elements into html text, get it done by someone in css and the site will be immediately a whole lot better I reckon.
good luck mate, nice work etc :)
ps. I'm going to be doing the same soon myself - time for a massive and long overdue change so watch this space you might be able to pick over a site of the old Kelpsters soon and get your own back ;D

erm...
sorry baskerville!
look, if it's at all helpful, i've done the css for your site with all plain text elements. the thing i can't do is the php bit. so if you want the css files and a dw template and then i can show you how to easily use it, that might be a solution to our little impasse!
sorry i haven't been able to help more. i bit off more than i could chew.
:(
i also think the site is great. i think all the work shown is brilliant and it's so plain-talking, a bit like yourself.
:D

I've always been a fan of your work and your site Baskerville. The site is so understated which shows your confidence in the work, which I think is bang-on for good presentation...
I'd look towards a more sturdy typface, right now it degrades a bit too much. Especially the italics...
Other than that, for me to give someone like yourself further direction, I'd want to know what type of studio you're looking to move towards...

Thanks guys,
I definitely need to change the text into reall html, rather than fuzzy jpegs.
That will make it tons easier to work on and update.Don't worry para, I reckon I'll cope, I think it will be good for me to get back into some proper code based web design, believe it or not I used to be able to write html sites from scratch (well, basic ones).
I'm happy with the way the right-hand frame works (for content). But to update that left-hand menu frame involves making whole new sets of jpegs which takes ages and deters me from ever updating my work.

I was thinking you could maybe eliminate one of the clicks it takes to reach the work in your navigation, if you're looking for other suggestions - possibly have the categories of work cascade under the work heading by default perhaps...

Don't do a 1-pager, not even for the fact that so many people have them, but it doesn't show much imagination, resourcefulness or creativity and rarely does the work justice....

it must be the season.
I started working on my 'portfolio' site this weekend. it's darn hard designing for yourself.Baskerville - the site para did is so nearly there. You should get a dump of it and look at the CSS - it's solid.
Unfortunately for you and everyone involved I now charge for websites and have no time to finish it.

ha. i was just looking for that.
yeah, josh, nick that css, it's decent code.

i think with a quick dreamweaver template lesson you'll be able to update it.

(Oct 16 06, 02:10)I disagree, I don't think it's any less creative having a one pager that shows a good flow to the work and thought process involved in making it.
It's no different to saying that having a site with a navigation down the left and a logo top left is unoriginal.

In terms of the job market, I can only speak for myself and I've found that my one pager has worked really well for me in getting interviews as I'm also on the lookout after being made redundant.
The one pager works well because if it's done well then it's immediate impact.
Baskerville's site at the moment asks the viewer to click a couple of times before seeing any examples of the great work that's hidden away.
Most people who are looking for work are inevitably going to have to deal with recruitment agents. These people don't click through, they want to see something snazzy right away otherwise they'll think twice about sending you to their clients.
The other benefit is that the employer who's going to interview you has a simple reference they only need to print once for it to be sat on their desk when looking through cvs/folios.
I don't think they lack imagination, I think they offer a very good way of presenting a lot of information concisely.
Good luck!

problem with 1-pagers is most of the time you present the user with too much, most of the time, it's showing 1 project and then having a bit of another showing. To me, i just don't like that...
Also, especially if you haven't done much web/interactive design and you're looking at working for studio's that do that, you need to show something that has relevance. When are you ever going to design a page scrolling website for anyone other than a designer?
At least by categorizing and giving a user some navigation, you're letting them be in control. I hate scrolling down a page, hoping the work will get better or even more applicable, and it doesn't...
- kelpie0
maybe the key is to start the site showing the first project in your list and make it a good one - missout those those clicks at the start and make 'about' 'contact' and such the areas which the user has to go and find.
- mr_snuggles0
wow, it's freezing in here, my fingers and mind are numb, my previous post is even more scattered than normal...

I want to make a site with all the work randomly displayed in a massive white textless area where you control your position using a joystick to scoot about and look at more work. that would rawk.

i like 1 pagers.
i'm too hungover to back it up, but i think jamble is right.

what kind of companies would you want to work for?
- Baskerville0
thanks moth and para, I have a friend who's a programmer now (not web) and he's really getting into php and mysql now, so I guess he could probably take all the code you guys did and work with it. It would be a shame for it to go to waste.
I make him take a look at it. What would he need, just what's on that link?
- paraselene0
you can get the css off that link, yes:
http://baskerville.paraselene.co…
if you want the php, let me know and i'll send you a zip. although that might be more trouble than it's worth since it's not finished and might just confuse someone else going in to look at it.
- Baskerville0
great, thanks!
I'll still give you a link for design when it's finished though!
