I was one click from pulling the trigger on a brand-new MacBook when, on a whim, I decided to check out the refurbished action from Apple.
Anyone ever bought refurbished goods from Apple? Do they put a new case on the computers, or is there a chance they'll come scatched, etc?

Everyone one of my still functioning Macs has been a refurb... my Powerbook looked like it had never left the box, as did my G5, there is alway a chance of 'minor cosmetic damage' it says that on the Apple Refurb Website, but you get a good price. Hell my iPod was a refurb and it arrived totally scratch free... afterall it is not the look particularly, it is the computer which matters and these are completely tested and guaranteed.

i bought my ibook refurb from there and also bought a refurb ipod nano from there.
both showed up without a scratch on them.
i was blown away when i turned over the ipod and there wasn't a single scratch on it.
the only problem with buying a macbook is you can't upgrade it via the site like you can a new one. you have to buy it as is and add more ram or whatever later.

I don't know how true this is, but an Apple store employee once told me that refurbed Apple merch is actually of equal or higher quality as brand new Apple merch, as they repalce any part that isn't working and any casing that is damaged.
Take that with a grain of salt, as I can't see anybody replacing the back of an ipod cause the metal was scratched.

i got an ipod and the fuckin thing went tits up a month and a half later!!!

I assume that there is still the standard warranty in place?

Tits up! That's hilarious.
I'm not that concerned about scratches, but it's nice to hear that most have had scratch-free experiences.
Seems like refurb is the way to go, then. thanks all.

There is a "One Year LImited Warranty" and you can also get applecare.

do they test refurbs for e.coli?

All my macs have been refurbs. Actually bought a refurb iMac this morning. I always get the AppleCare protection.

both my roomates got refurbed imac intels, they look brand new, and work perfectly. though my girlfriend bought a refurb ipod and it went 'tits up' after about a month, but apple store gave me a new one no cost!
i'd say get the refurb save a couple hundred and buy some more ram or something

I got my first powerbook refurbished, not one single problem, after a few years I sold it and bought a new one from apple, hard drive needed repair and there was one dead pixel .
I will never buy a new product again if there is refurbished available.
here is why:
1) you save money
2) product has been "beta tested for you" if there was any defects with it manufacturer repairs the problem, and takes it up to selling standards, they can't charge the same cause the box was opened once, that's all.
3) product comes with warranty as if it was new.
Since then, I bought a SLR camera, a DLP projector and a set of studio monitors not a single problem so far..
(touching wood)
Sometimes product was on display, never even used, box was open that's it.
Go for it with confidence. The way I see it, you have a better chance to find that the product comes in better condition than a new one that no other user tested before.

Colonel Sanders was a member of a secret organization that runs the world, called the Pentavirate, right up until he went tits up.
How I hate the Colonel, with his wee beady eyes and that smug look on his face, "Oooh, would you like to try my chicken?"
What they don't tell you is that he put an addictive chemical in it that makes you crave it fortnightly!

Next question: glossy vs. non?
I have a non-glossy powerbook now and it's been good to me. Anyone have special love or hate for the gloss?
- k0na_an0k0
i was at fry electronics the other day and saw the glossy first hand for the first time. unreal. so much brighter/vivid colors.
the glare was nominal to what i've heard on messageboards.
i wish i'd gotten the glossy for my macbook pro. :(
the glossy was amazing.

glossy hey?
*strokes chin
- k0na_an0k0
honestly it made the colors jump off the screen.
text looked a bit crisper too.
also i farted around with the new imac 24". so sweet! now i want one. fuck.

Yeah, from what I've seen, the glossy is amazing. Worried about glare a little bit, though.
F*ck it, I'm pulling the trigger on some glossy action now.
My powerbook is going to mutiny soon, so no time to waste.

Alright, now who wants to buy a powerbook....? ;)

Glossy in my opinion is not good if you are going to travel with your computer. There are special stickers that you apply to your screen and you get a vry similar glossy effect, while this is not new, being able to use my computer outside, or at coffee shops or even nightclubs (because of the nature of my work, I find myself using a computer in the weirdest places), glossy is deffenetly a no for me.
Colors do look a lot nicer, like if they had more saturation, another problem if you work on different computers.
So in my opinion, get the anti reflex option, and if you like the saturation and the shine, get one of those screen stickers, you can always remove it when it presents a problem for you. otherwise you are stuck with it.
again this is my opinion and I'm no expert. Just telling you why it does not work for me.

Thanks Meeklo, just the info I was looking for on the gloss screen option.
