Anyone know how to do this?????? having real trouble with it. can u point me to any tuts?
I have managed to get the gif transparent but there is a white border,!!!!!!!!
Help

you must use the same background colour as where the transp gif is supposed to be.
Like, to have that NEWSTODAY logo in a transp gif you would have to set it on #F4F4F4 and then select that colour to be transparent.

the problem is the background is going to be changing, its is a content managed site and there is a section where an image(which the client can change) is changed behind a gif mask.
is that the only way of doing it? making it the same colour as the background?

there is a hack for ie6.

the only way to 'achieve' this with a gif is to fake the shadow by creating a 2bit dither -
(yes, it's a bit of a shit example)I do this by first saving-for-web the shadow gradient as 2 colours, with whichever dither pattern looks appropriate. I then bring this saved file back into the document i'm working on, add it as a layer, delete the background, and re-save as a gif.
*phew!
Basically - if you want this done well, use pngs, as MrDobolina says!

is there anything about web design that isn't a nightmare?
- madirish0
no randd, there is not.
why the double d's now? aside from the fruedian thing?
- Nairn0
er, the gif i linked to really is a terrible example of this in practice - if you can be bothered and you play with it, i'm sure you can get better results.

Use a PNG Dave, will work fine in modern browsers. To get it to work in older versions of IE. Look here.

Can be a nightmare if you're going for a rollover effect tho...
