illustrator cs / 2 masking

I can't find a well-worded, useful link, so instead here's an incomprehensible post -
- Create shape to be masked, in output colour.
- Duplicate shape in place, then apply a black and white gradient, where black is the 'alpha colour' (ie. transparent), and white is the colour you want to keep.
- with the black and white gradient mask-object on TOP of object-to-be-masked, layer select both, then, from your Transparency palette's additional options (> button), click 'make opacity mask'.this applies to illustrator versions =

It's easy, but not Flash compatible in anyway.
There is also ian ssue with print media - how it's flattened
