My powerbook is about to die. It freezes at least once a day. It is over 3 years old and out of warranty, so it is about time for me to upgrade.

I was going to go with a macbook (normal) to replace it, because it would be smaller and easier to carry, but I was looking and my three year old ATI video card in my powerbook is more capable than what comes with the macbook.

Should I spend the extra 800$'s for the video card?

I need this to last another three years, so I am torn.

I am probly getting a desktop later in the year for stuff that requires a lot of power, so maybe it won't matter.

Either way, I need to decide and buy something this week so I can get on with work.

    Any suggestions?

what will you be doing with it? do the apps you use rely on the gpu? if not, you'll probably be fine until you get your desktop.

i do web application development (textmate, terminal, geeky stuff), design work (adobe cs), etc

one thing that i like to be able to do is watch a dvd in the background while i work. Since i upgraded to 10.4, i havn't been able to do that...i should go test this at the store and see if it works.

But yeah, i would need the gpu a small % of the time, but again, it needs to perform as well as my powerbook has for the next three years

I'm selling my MacBook and iMac... See "Intel Macs for sale" thread. It's far more capable than my G4 was and matches up fairly well in performance to the iMac.

so i went a messed around with both a mac book and it's pro partner...they both seem like they can do the job

    i don't think it's worth the extra 7-800 $'s for a big video card...and i like the smaller size (i have a 15" powerbook now)

i also don't think i can pay the black tax...which means i might get teh whiteness...although it sucks...

i want to be happy with this decision...

would a white mac book serve me well?

i won't have a big honkin desktop until Q3 this year...so it will have to be the main work horse until then
