wow, good call sickman!
that's amazing, Maya doesn't support (or the other way around) most high end videocards...

it makes a huge difference for your previewing
REAL big difference if you use all 4 viewports at once

hmmm, tough one, cos all the cards supported are pretty 'old' ones.

3d apps usually 'officially' support professional grade cards (like nVidia quadro or ATI Fire GL) consumer level gaming cards will work 99% of the time but won't have access to some of the openGL acceleration in the viewports. They're actually the same hardware for both cards, just different bios and drivers.
I think the general feeling out there is that ATI has been neglecting their drivers when it comes to the workstation market. nVidia would be my choice.

i'm running vista right now--installed today--and it actually works with this new card. the old card i had (ati with 256 megs of ram) kept making the system restart.
so yeah, if you're considering doing the vista thing, upgrade. 512 at least. and get a bigger power supply.

nVidia quadro and ATI Fire GL have as only advantage to their 3d 'consumer' brothers that their bios and drivers are more 3d app friendly?

pretty much, the workstation cards are heavily optimized for openGL
(as opposed to direct X like gaming cards). they support more discrete viewports and hardwear overlays, and they're certified by their manufacturers to provide a higher degree of stability /reliability (usually buy stepping down the click speed a bit)but these are all tweeks at the software end, hardware is virtually identical.

and ofcourse the workstation cards come with a much less consumer friendly pricetag... tough one.

(Jan 28 07, 11:10)a while back someone posted a way to hack most consumer ati cards to make them more compatible with apps like maya and max.
but out of ignorance he was told to F off

That's a shame... as not being ignorant I would be interested to check out this post.

(Jan 28 07, 13:24)'sFunny - I remember that, as I remember wondering what on earth he was on about, as it's entirely unfamiliar to me. I don't remember him being told to f- off, but I do remember at least 2 people finding it of use and saying as much. I think it was over 6 months ago, sadly - beyond the archive limit in here.
Curious how memory works, eh? *takes off rose-tinted glasses

well, it is usual info and perhaps should be posted on a forum with longer longetivity than PVN.
