Anyone had this done before? Are there any cheaper or diy methods of doing it?
Mylaptop got a blue screen kernel data inpage error and could not restart properly and was clicking. I replaced it but would like some of the data back. It wasn't backed up as it was a new laptop and I thought I had time until I needed to.

PC? First - do nothing. Then use this:

It should recover any files in one piece, but you need to run it from a separate harddrive so you're not erasing the data you're trying to save.

One of my drives became unusable for some random reason last year. I installed window automatic update and all of a sudden it was fixed.

I've had it done twice. Once a corrupt disk, DiskDoctors fetched the info for a couppla hundred bucks.
Second time, a little worse. Had a magnet on my PowerBook. Ended up paying close to 15 grand to get priceless biz documents off it.

Check these folks out. They're excellent, but complete recovery could be as high as 2,500 bucks.
