Does the brand you buy really matter?
I realize that some brands cost more because the casing is more sturdy, but I won't be taking it anywhere. It'll stay in my room.
I'm planning on buying one soon to transfer all my videos, so any advice is appreciated :)

jaline buy an internal HD, and an external enclosure for it. that's the cheapest (and from my experience) best way to go. its late. go to bed!

I really don't know how much brand name matters, but I bought my Acomdata 240G on a whim (as it was on sale with a rebate and had no idea what brands were touted as good or bad) and that thing has kicked ass ever since.

I have multiple Lacie Drives, that have never given me trouble. PC/MAC mall had a sweet sale going on for a while!

also..any tips you might recommend if you came home kind of drunk after hanging out with the buds and the gf is pissed?
- Jaline0
nocomply, depends on what she likes. I'd say...try not to go near her until you sober up. Clearly, I have no real experience with this, since you are definitely going to be interacting with her once you go home, particularly because you may not realize what the hell you're doing while you're drunk. Let's hope it's the good kind of "interacting".

make a decision to let her go or change, antics will do little to change anything in the long run. mean it or shut up.
jaline,
enclosures
http://www.newegg.com/ProductSor…hard drives
http://www.newegg.com/ProductSor…I would choose 10,000 rpm western digital drives that do not exceed 320gb, this is because of cost and loss.
start putting all your eggs in one big basket, that's a rough day if that basket ever breaks or is lost
(might as well buy 2)
also note the connection method, can it do usb and firewire?
large file transfers on usb1 connections is retarded slow

um...yeah...interaction kind of came and went. i'm in our bedroom at my computer. she's watching law and order or something in the living room. and pissed.
just want to get it straightened out so we can sleep in peace. i guess there's no magic to it. oh well.

oh and to get back on the actual topic of HDs, i would second version4's recommendation of western digital if there's a good deal on it.

does that seem like a good deal?
I'm also thinking about the internal drive with the external enclosure. I'm getting one this weekend, probably.

i have had 1 lacie drive for about 4 years now with no problems. Just last month the OTHER lacie drive completely crashed and erased half of my data. Only the non-important stuff was able to be recovered. THEN, i had a seagate drive with the replacement data which crashed 5 days after I got it for no reason...

(Feb 6 07, 22:32)external + case vs plain external is about a wash price wise. jaline, i highly recommend a seagate external. they have a 5 year warranty. this says A LOT about their confidence in their products. you may have to fandangle a bit, but their drives are guaranteed for 5 years.
stay away from lacie. statistically speaking, they aren't highly rated despite what a person here and there says.
i chose a seagate over a western digital because seagates have a longer warranty and over time, tend to be quieter.
good luck.

I forget what I bought awhile ago, but it said to not use it like a regular hard drive and it has worked brilliantly for about 2 years.
Maxtor One Touch I think.
...
Now that I’ve typed this of course it will blow up when I get home and I’ll lose irreplaceable data. :X
- Jaline0
I think I'm going to go for something Western Digital, since the reviews are mostly positive. I can't find anything Seagate near any places or at any Bestbuy or Futureshop location near me. Only option would be through the internet.

haha..wow some great responses from me in here...i forgot about that...and don't worry she apologized the next morning.
but yeah i actually just bought an external WD 500GB HD for only $150. It rock! super sturdy, quiet, nice LED...good stuff.
like jaylarson said the cost of external vs. internal with external case is about the same these days. sorry, i was living back in 2006 there for that first post.

there goes most of my paycheck for the week :(
Thankfully, I don't really need much right now...just some new shoes or something. That can wait a few weeks when it's even more muddy...and shoes get dirty...yay!
Anyway, my Toshiba has been getting hot lately and I don't want to lose all my data like I did last time. So I think this is a good decision.

you will not be disappointed with western digital. are you looking at the My Book?
furthermore, you may be able to get the model you are looking at cheaper at newegg.com vs the retail outlets, even with shipping! newegg is awesome!
*beams with nerddom and adjusts specs.

hah, thanks. I prefer getting it local though.
It's like $100 off at Futureshop (sale price being $150 for 250GB), so that seems decent. Same as Bestbuy, except I only save $70 because apparently it was already cheaper than Futureshop's price.
It's funny how they "compete" with each other, but it's so obvious that they're owned by the same person. Or someone who copies the other person, since their websites use the same scripts, features, categorizing system, etc.

yeah so i saw online that office depot had it for $150. I printed it out and brought it to staples where they pricematch +10%.
So the extra 10% basically covered my tax and i walked out the door with the HD for just under $150. pretty sweet!
Damn i see the same one is $219 now!
