Luckily mine will be accompanying a move..It's still 6 months down the road but I figured it's good to start thinking ahead.

that kind of layoff sounds like a special firing to me :)

my last job was fucked up. i walked in to find someone sitting at my desk..working on my computer. went into the project manager's office and well...he shut the door and told me the news. layoff! they didnt even give me notice..fuckers. but..in general 2-3 weeks is good.

Hey Travis, YOU'RE FIRED!@
- nocomply0
I'd say 2 weeks. No more, no less. It always kind of gets awkward when everyone knows you're going to split. You don't want to be there for a month like that. At the same time, you never want to be a dick and quit on the spot cuz that can come back to bite you in the ass.
2 weeks is the business standard. Just do it and you'll be fine.

i once gave 4 days notice at an agency where I worked for only 6 weeks. Nightmare of a place. Never put it on my resume. It's like it never happened...

I had thought 4 weeks... but not any more.

and you all know all who the person I mean is
- rafalski0
sometimes they want you not to come anymore, a leaving person wandering around for weeks does not boost company morale

Awesome, Thanks for all the suggestions. 2 weeks made the most sense to me but I just thought I would grab a second opinion.

Haha good point Alice.
- aliceblue0
as all say - 2 weeks
(but after you take all your good stuff home just incase they show you the door;)

Just like Kona said.
2 weeks, double-check your contract or employee handbook just in case there's language in there instructing you what to do formally.

2wks is good. unless you are super super special.

Give two weeks. That is good enough.
If you give them more they may ask you to leave before that date anyways.
Say you gave them a solid month and they let you go that next week. Now you're not getting paid for 3 weeks that you could have been before you start your new job.
2 weeks protects both you and them.
- barbtastic0
yeah ppl are paranoid you will fuck them up
- maximillion_0
treat them as they treated you. some will march you out the door the minute they hear....and you have to get personal belongings later...

lol gruntt
i've heard rude stories about employers dumping you the minute they discover you're leaving
maybe ask your employer?
ha

giving any notice is a courtesy to them, 2 weeks is plenty. they dont own you and would give you 2 weeks if they were going to break you off. a month is silly.
- grunttt0
2 week minimum (unless you work with complete assholes)
if you're my co-worker (that just so happens to not be in right now), a 5 year notice would be appreciated.

What do you guys think is a good amount of notice to give a firm before taking off? Obviously at least 2 weeks but should I give a month to be curtious?
