If you're truly comitted than Maya would probably be the most versatile of the 3D packages.

I find XSI and 3DMax are the easiest to use. Maya is a bit cumbersome.

for mograph you can't go wrong with c4d. i'm assuming you use AE and c4d interacts really well with AE. download the demo and see if it suits you.

(Mar 2 07, 06:38)i agree. i think c4d has a shorter learning curve than maya. i can't speak for the other apps. Anyone try to use blender?

While we're on the topic, does Cinema 4D export vector/swf?
I don't mean rasterized frame by frame swf, I mean the equivalent of what Swift 3D does. Maya has vector output, but Maya is a full time job. I'm not up for learning that.

Would Blender be any good for a beginner? Just 'cos it's free'n'all.

At a conference in Prague we had Julian Oliver go through how to use Blender.
The package is so anti-intuitive that I have clearly no idea how anyone can approach the package without tutelage.
Being able to generate 3D with Python scripts is brilliant though.
