Anyone got experience of having an Apple product (specifically an iMac) being fixed whilst having AppleCare?
My iMac is playing up – making strange noises and frequently hanging. Could be hard drive.
Will they fix it and replace the hard drive (assuming that's what it is), or would they replace it?

Have had experience with the AppleCare engine...
They may repair it, most likely they will replace it.
BE SURE to archive the entire drive before sending it to them. Even if you instruct them NOT to wipe your drive and replace, they will most likely do it anyway.
Have had multiple Macs sent for repair, and regardless of what instructions you send or tell someone over the phone – they still clean the fucker out and give you a new, empty drive.

Yeah, I've heard they'll just wipe it. I've ordered an external hard and will be backing ASAP. Gonna use Carbon Copy Cloner so I'll have a complete archive.
How long will it take them to do whatever they'll do?
I can drop it off at a fairly local Apple store, will they do it same day?
Also, is a straight replacement really an option? Be kinda cool too drop of my old G5 iMac and walk out with a spanking new Intel model :)

If its just the drive, they will replace the drive – you won't get a newer model.
Usually, even if you go to the applestore, they will send it out. They say 3 days – expect a week.
Just as easy to mail it. Call up and they will mail you out a box to send it in, shipping label, paid, etc. comes next day usually

AppleCare has worked pretty good for me. I have a 3 year old PowerBook which during it's cover under AppleCare has had 3 new screens/lids. I've normally just left the machine with them for up to a week but always got it back all sorted within a few days.
I've had a recent issue with the hard drive myself but they weren't prepared to replace that. They ran a few tests but they gave it the ok even though it makes a nasty noise. Just make sure you have a full and recent backup of the drive when you send it in as they may well wipe it.

Get it for any machine its great. They refurb your whole machine. Send you box in about a day and you get it back in about a week depending on what needs to be replaced

So, the general consensus is that:
1. I phone them.
2. They send me a box.
3. I ship it off.
4. Apple fix/replace it.
5. Apple send it back.
6. It'll take about a week.Ta.
