I'm about 3 months removed from graduating college and found myself working production at a marketing group. Day after day i find myself making nothing portfolio worthy. I know i need experience but how much can i go on just relying on Student Work? i'm trying freelance but always get shot down when i have big ideas.

I would say, stay there for a year, and move on... unless of course you are a terrible designer... then just be thankful you have a job that pays you to be terrible.
my 2¢.

work experience takes time, its not going to ever happen overnight and career wise you really need to put in years to gain that level of experence.
in this satge of your career dont become over hasty to get your idea out.
this is your time to learn to leisten to your client's needs and learn to fulfill them.
your talents are to problem solve the job.
networking is your key now, and meet and talk to as many new people as you can, give out your number to more different kinds of people to help broaden your client base.
more clients means more work experience means more time to get your ideas out in the market.
you really need to prove to the client that you have work experience with real time work challanges and that you have the ability to surpass them, the ability to figure out a way to get it done right as you have done it before.
good luck!!

quit. there's no question about it. you're setting yourself up for anything else you do from this point forward, and you always will be.

I did this,
I was offered a job before I Left uni as a graphic designer at a digital imaging company (I was basically designing mobile phone covers). The money was good and I got to stay in Newcastle (UK). I stayed for a year and it was the biggest mistake I ever made.
When I realised that this was going nowhere I quit but with a portfolio still full of Student work I didn't have much to go on.
I went on the hunt for a placement (i.e essential experience) it took me a further year to find a job (the market was crap then/I was ;) therefore I was 2 years behind all my college mates.
So I would say quit NOW and stomach not earning any ££ for a few months whilst you gain valuable experience.

i think that's good advice from Dancer.

if you need bills paid then stick with the job for a wee while.
if you had any passion for design and what you do then you'd be going home in the evening and working on your own projects that WERE portfolio worthy.
people dont just land good jobs, you've got to stand out from the rest, you've got to show a passion - that for no reason other than for your own satisfaction you'd happily spend your spare time doing shit for yourself.
when i was at art college i wasnt just doing the coursework, i was doing posters for bands, flyers, learning basic html (we werent getting taught that no the course) and also teaching myself how to use director (flash wasnt out yet).
and THAT kind of dedication and extra portfolio work is the kind of effort that gets you snapped up by a cool company.
whenever we've got students in for work experience i always tell them that advice.
places want people that live eat and breathe design and dont just go home at 5.30 and watch pop idol.

Even the shittiest jobs are great for the experience. Unless you have other jobs already lined up, suck it up but keep your eyes open. WIDE.

THis is all well and true Kon but I felt that they (design companies) didn't care much for flyer design and posters. They wanted hours in the studio learning from CD's and also to know why I had no/very few work placements.
I got a response once from Dominic Lippa (now at Pentagram) when I asked for advice on my book/a placement. He said "bad/wrong companies should come with a health warning & they do no good for your career"
Trust me I was passionate but this alone doesn't get you the job...
...that or I was shite

All well and true if you already work for a design company, not if your not though
